The actor was born in London after his parents immigrated from Jamaica. However, the family relocated to Canada shortly after.
Professional Life
Coates has been acting since 1985. He has appeared extensively across theatre, film, and television and also runs an acting school where he serves as a teacher. His school is called Coates and Company.
His first role on screen was in 1989 in War of the Worlds, where he played an unnamed driver. Since then, he has appeared in many bit parts and supporting roles for various series and films.
Some notorious shows where Coates appeared include Kyle XY, The Zack Files, La Femme Nikita, These Arms of Mine, Fringe, Supernatural, Saving Hope, Fringe, and Defiance. He appeared as Hephaestus in Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief. In addition, he had an appearance on Smallville.
In La Femme Nikita, he had a recurring role playing Haled. The Zack Files saw him appear as Headmaster T. Monk. Another notorious role included Jermaine Brooks on Degrassi: The Next Generation.
Coates was cast as a lead character in The Dresden Files, which adapted the book series of the same name, but would only run for one season. He played Morgan.
He had a recurring series of appearances on ‘da Kink in My Hair, where he played Richard and appeared in 7 episodes. In addition, he appeared in Covert Affairs and Nikita, the 2011 series.
Coates had a role in Tron: Legacy, where he played Bartik. He also appeared in the X-Men: Apocalypse.
Coates had many bit and supporting parts in sci-fi and fantasy shows. Some additional examples include Warehouse 13, Beauty and the Beast, The Strain, Haven, Sanctuary, 12 Monkeys, Dark Matter, and Star Trek: Discovery. In this series, he appeared on several episodes playing Terral. On Defiance, he also had a continued role in season 3 playing T’evgin. He appeared on Shadowhunters, the adaptation of the book series by Cassandra Clare.
On Jupiter’s Legacy, Coates played a recurring character, Captain Borges. He served as the captain of the ship one of the main characters, Sheldon Sampson, used to travel the Atlantic. Sadly, Jupiter’s Legacy was canceled after one season, but it received an animated spin-off titled SuperCrooks.
In Jupiter’s Legacy, he was seen alongside cast members Ben Daniels, Elena Kampouris, Gracie Dzienny, Ian Quinlan, Josh Duhamel, Kurtwood Smith, Leslie Bibb, Matt Lanter, Tyler Mane, Tenika Davis, Mike Wade, Meg Steedle, David Julian Hirsh and Andrew Horton.
Starting in 2021, he has appeared on the popular series The Expanse, playing Admiral Sidiqi, a recurring character. The Expanse is an adaptation of a book series of the same name that has been praised for its political intrigue and complex characters in a unique sci-fi world.
