Professional Life

Susi would take on various roles throughout her career. Her first film role was in 1984 in Love Scenes. Other notorious roles include films such as The Secret of My Success, My Blue Heaven, Masters of Menace, Death Becomes Her, Wedding Bell Blues, Eat Your Heart Out, The Amati Girls, Cats & Dogs, Red Velvet, and Just Go With It. Her role as Ms. Mancuso in the short film a Life, Taken in 2014 was her final film role.

She had an extensive television career. She started out in 1974 playing Monique Marmelstein in Kolchak: The Night Stalker, a role she would also reprise for Crackle of Death. She would appear in McCoy, McMillan & Wife, Rich Man, Poor Man, Simon & Simon, Generations, Growing Pains, Head of the Class, Murphy Brown, Cheers, Doogie Howser, M.D., Seinfield, Mad About You, Blossom, Married with Children, Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, The King of Queens, That ’70s Show, Ugly Betty, Grey’s Anatomy, and more.

Between 2007 and 2014, the actress would provide the voice of Debbie Wolowitz, the mother of main character Howard Wolowitz. A continued gag was that this character would be often heard but not seen. She would appear in forty episodes. Her voice as Debbie Wolowitz would also appear in Young Sheldon, the series spin-off that focuses on Sheldon Cooper as a young boy genius. When she passed away, her character was declared to have passed away as well, and this was addressed in the show. Howard was a geek and a nerd like the other main male characters. His relationship with his mother, especially at the start of the series, was the butt of many jokes due to her not respecting boundaries and yelling many things at him, no matter who heard.

In Big Bang Theory, she worked with cast members Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco, Mayim Bialik, Melissa Rauch, Johnny Galecki, Kunal Nayyar, Simon Helberg, Kevin Sussman, John Ross Bowie, Laura Spencer, Wil Wheaton, Brian George, Christine Baranski, Brian Posehn, Laurie Metcalf and Aarti Mann.

Susi did voice work for two video games as well: CSI: NY and Mafia II.

Trivia

Her final appearance as Mrs. Wolowitz took place in the spin-off Young Sheldon in 2019. It used an archived recording of her voice.

After her passing, a photo of her was glued to the fridge in Sheldon’s apartment on set so that Susi would remain as a part of the show until the end. She would have other appearances thanks to her voice recordings, but her character would also be stated to have passed away, which became a plot point.

Susi first became known for appearing in the cult series Kolchak, which was recognized for its weird and surreal approach and combination of crime and fantastic elements, which made him much more popular today.
