Who is Bessie Carter?
Bessie Carter is an English actress best known for portraying Prudence Featherington in the Shonda Rhimes period drama series Bridgerton.
Westminster, London, England
Her early life and career beginnings
Bessie is the only child of actors Imelda Staunton and Jim Carter. Growing up surrounded by creatives and aspiring to work in entertainment spurred her to tow the same part. While in school, she joined the playgroup with the intent of becoming an actress. She was no fan of secondary education and switched from Francis Holland School to Camden School for Girls, deeming it the best decision of her life. Since Bessie didn’t like the idea of attending school when she had her life already figured out, she began contemplating dropping out at sixteen with her mother’s full support. However, her father objected to it, encouraging her to complete her education, and she did.
Knowing that attending a university was out of the equation, Bessie took a year out, worked as an assistant stage manager, traveled, auditioned for drama school, and began studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She graduated in 2016 and won a prize for Best Screen Actor.
Bessie’s professional career life
Bessie appeared onscreen in a 2007 tv series called Cranford and as an ensemble Factory Woman in Les Miserables, an epic period musical film by Tom Hooper that aired in 2012. The young actress also played Amy Vincent on the Farewell My Lovely episode of the 2017 Doc Martin.
From 2015 to 2019, the budding actress acted on stage in various theaters, including performing in the Guildhall School of Drama, The Old Vic, and Liverpool House. Also, in the same year, she was lucky to be cast in a British-American television drama, Howards End, adapted from E.M Forster’s 1910 novel, becoming one of the main characters, Evie Wilcox. The director had chosen to give young theater actors a chance, and Bessie proved herself.
In 2018, Bessie portrayed the role of Sophie in a short film titled Oil and, in the next year, landed the role of secretary in an independent crime thriller film, The Good Liar. More parts came her way, and she snagged the leading role in the 2019 British historical drama tv series Beecham House as Violet Woodhouse.
Her career was beginning to burgeon in 2020, having acted in two short films called Two as New Ella and in the other one as Jess in Emerge. However, Bessie’s breakthrough came after she was chosen as one of the cast members of the period drama series Bridgerton, playing the role of Prudence Featherington, the eldest daughter of the family. Ever since the first season of Bridgerton, she has attained new heights and gained global prominence.
In Bridgerton, she worked with Phoebe Dynevor, Regé-Jean Page, Nicola Coughlan, Jonathan Bailey, Harriet Cains, Ruth Gemmell, Claudia Jessie, Luke Newton, Luke Thompson, Polly Walker, Ruby Barker, Ben Miller, Adjoa Andoh, Julie Andrews and Golda Rosheuvel.
