Her early life and career beginnings
Ruby’s parents, from Ireland and Montserrat, put her in the foster care system, where she joined her elder sister, Harriet, just after her birth. In her early years, she grew up in London and Winchester, after which she lived in Glasgow with her adoptive parents until she became a teen. Having attended Elizabeth Murray School of Dance for weekend lessons and was in an RBS advertisement at a young age, she developed a strong desire to perform. She attended Tadcaster Grammer School, where she did well academically. She then earned a spot to study International Relations at the London School of Economics, but her love for drama and dance superseded her desire to read. While acting in local theatre productions, she worked at the railway museum in York to earn a livelihood.
Ruby’s professional career life
Since Ruby’s entrance into the acting world, she has appeared as a recurring character as Daisie in the 2017 fantasy teen television drama Wolfblood. The series focuses on Maddy Smith and others, who can transform in a full moon into wolf-like creatures called wolfbloods, similar to werewolves. They soon cultivate friendship and deal with fitting in, sharing, and keeping their secrets from others. Afterward, she landed in two episodes of the award-winning British medical soap opera Doctors, portraying Nina Hobbs/Shelley Willians.
As an incredibly talented actress, Ruby Barker starred in the drama How To Stop A Recurring Dream in 2020, portraying a rebellious Yakira, who kidnapped her half-sister, Kelly, in the face of a looming split-custody separation between their parents. She had craved reconnecting with Kelly after a strained relationship, resulting from the resentment she felt when their father moved on immediately after her mother’s death. She also portrayed Georgia Nixon in an episode of the political drama series Cobra in 2020.
She was one of the break-out stars who made it onto the 2020 Shonda Rhimes Regency romance drama Bridgerton where she played Marina Thompson, a Featherington cousin. As a series regular, she never imagined playing a substantial role in a period drama, let alone becoming a prominent actor who gained overnight global recognition.
In Bridgerton, she worked with Phoebe Dynevor, Regé-Jean Page, Nicola Coughlan, Jonathan Bailey, Harriet Cains, Bessie Carter, Ruth Gemmell, Claudia Jessie, Luke Newton, Luke Thompson, Polly Walker, Ben Miller, Adjoa Andoh, Julie Andrews and Golda Rosheuvel.
Still riding in the waves of her newfound fame as an outstanding actress, she has other works on the pipeline, including a family drama titled Running With Lions. Also, she is gearing up to star in the Studiocanal and The Picture Company’s thriller Baghead which they shot in Berlin, Germany. She plays Buttercup in The Princess Bride on BBC Radio 4, a two-part radio play.
Her personal life
Ruby has stated in one of her interviews how incredibly fortunate she feels to have been adopted alongside her sister into one family. She now lives in Leeds with her adorable black and white cat Mr. Morse who serves as her oldest friend and an incredible companion.
