She graduated from North Atlanta High School. She then joined the Magnet performing arts program in high school, saying, “This is where you learn to love theater and hone your skills in an early performance. Even if I could get anything in the world, I wouldn’t trade this experience”.
Jane was born to a single mother, Renee Chahoe. Her mother was only eighteen years old when she gave birth to Erika Jayne. Before she was one year old, her parents got separated. Describing her childhood in her book ‘A Beautiful Mess’, Jane stated that her mother was “short with me, though, and irritable. She would grab my ponytail, dig her nails into my arms, and stand on my feet.”
Erica first met her biological father when she was 25 and likened it to “meeting a stranger.” She revealed that she had only seen her biological father twice after their first meeting, saying, “he has never admitted my existence, to anyone, and obviously to himself either.” She said that her difficult upbringing made her grow up quickly and taught her to be self-reliant.
While living in New York, she met Thomas Zizou when he worked as a DJ at a club in Manhattan. The couple married in December 1991 at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Shortly thereafter, she gave birth to her son, Thomas Zizou Jr. She moved to Los Angeles to fulfill her dream of becoming a singer a few years later after her divorce.
In 1998, she worked as a cocktail waitress at the Chasin restaurant when she was 27 years old. She met Thomas Girardi there.
In January 2000, she married Girardi, co-founder of Girardi & Keese in downtown Los Angeles.
She announced her divorce from Girardi in November 2020. One month after the divorce was announced, the couple was named in a lawsuit alleging the misappropriation of funds intended for the families of the victims of the fatal 2018 Lion Air crash. The media reported that the divorce might be a “trick” to hide assets.
She has a son, Thomas Zizou Jr. (born 1993), with her first ex-husband, Thomas Zizou. He was a police officer with the Los Angeles Police Department in 2016.
