The actor graduated from the University of Houston and the American Conservatory Theater.

Professional Life

Cecil debuted in film in 1995 in The Unspoken Truth. His debut on television took place in 1998. He was in Nash Bridges. His next role on the small screen came in 2000, and Cecil got a recurring role in The Beat as Mike Dorigan, appearing in 13 episodes. He also appeared in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit the same year.

In 2000, he was in Little Pieces, followed by The Back Page the next year, 2002’s Men in Black II, and 2003’s Pretend.

Between 2001 and 2002, he played the role of Tom Bellow in Pasadena, appearing in 11 episodes. In 2002, he was in Push, Nevada, as James A. Prufrock for eight episodes. This series was experimental, as viewers were offered a money prize if they could figure out the mystery of the show.

In 2004, he was in Mall Cop, then in That Night in 2005.

In 2014, Cecil was cast as Seth Grayson in House of Cards. He would remain with the series for 42 episodes until 2018. House of Cards was a widely acclaimed Netflix political drama that focused on Frank Underwood, played by Kevin Spacey, and his wife, Claire Underwood, played by Robin Wright. The series is full of intrigue and high-stakes drama against a political backdrop.

Derek Cecil also serves as Associate Artistic Director of the Rude Mechanicals Theater Co. in New York.

He went to the same high school as actor James Roday, best known for portraying Shawn Spencer in Psych.
