McGiver is the son of John McGiver, also an actor, and he was one of ten kids. In addition, he has Irish and Ukrainian heritage.

Professional Life

McGiver debuted in film in 1987 in Ironweed. This was followed by a 1990 role in Antigone/Rites of Passion. McGiver was also active in television. He made his debut on the small screen in 1993 in Law & Order. In 1998, he was in New York Undercover and Trinity.

In 2001, he got a role in As The World Turns.

His next film roles came in 2004 in Connie and Carla, where he played Tibor, and in Taxi, where he played Franklin.

In 2005, he was in Rescue Me. The next year, he returned to the Law & Order franchise in Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

In 2006, he appeared in The Pink Panther. In 2008, he got a role as Isaac in The Clique. In 2006, he was cast in The Wire, where he had a recurring role as Charles Marimow. The next year he appeared in 30 Rock.

He is a French horn player and has been for many years.

He originally meant to go into the Air Force and was accepted into the U.S. Air Force Academy, class of 1984, but chose not to go. Space flight has remained as a dream for the actor.
