Robin de Jesús is an openly gay actor. He often does charity work and speaks to young people about self-acceptance and living as who you are. While he was born in the U.S., he has Puerto Rican heritage.
Professional Life
The actor’s first professional role was as Michael in 2003’s Camp, which also featured Anna Kendrick. The film was not mainstream but received a cult following thanks to its strong themes and the way it could connect with people who felt like outcasts. De Jesús played Michael, a young gay teen who wore a dress to his prom and was beaten because of it.
In 2008, he appeared in the Broadway musical In the Heights. This performance earned him a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Musical.
In 2010, he was part of the revival of La Cage aux Folles, playing Jacob. The role earned him another Tony Award nomination as a featured actor. He would stay with the production until 2011.
Later, De Jesús would play Boq in Wicked at the Gershwin Theatre. 2019 saw his third Tony Award nomination as Best Featured Actor in a Play for his portrayal of Emory. This was for the iconic play The Boys in the Band. He would reprise the role in the Netflix adaption of the same name.
2021 saw De Jesús portray Michael in tick, tick… BOOM! on Netflix. The film was a musical and the directorial debut of actor and songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda, best known for Hamilton.
The actor has had a few other film performances. In 2006, he was in Fat Girls. In 2011, the actor played Robin in Gun Hill Road. In 2012, he was in Elliot Loves as Hector, followed by a role as Romeo Torres in Hair Brained, and also appeared in Bert and Arnie’s Guide to Friendship. In 2016, he was in 11:55. In 2020, in addition to his role in The Boys in the Band, where he reprised the part of Emory, he was also in Milkwater as George.
The actor has had a few television appearances too. In 2010, he was in How to Make It in America. Between 2012 and 2016, De Jesús played Jose Silva for five episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

Robin de Jesús has received various awards and nominations in addition to the Tony Award nominations. He won a 2007 Drama Desk Award for the ensemble performance In the Heights and got a nomination for the same award for La Cage aux Folles. In 2021, he was in consideration for the Satellite Award as Best Supporting Actor, the Hollywood Critics Association Film Award, and the Greater Western New York Film Critics Association Award for his role as Michael in tick, tick… BOOM!
