His early life and career beginnings
Thomas, born to British parents, was a shy, introverted kid in his early years. While in eighth grade, they cast him in a play that dramatically transformed him from a recluse to a funny, popular guy in school. On discovering improv, he jumped in and began performing.
Thomas attended the University of Victoria, after which he moved to Toronto, auditioning and subsequently enrolling in George Brown Theatre School. Rather than begin studying his course, he made his sketches while working at a New Balance store for an income.
Again, he moved to Chicago and enrolled at The Second City and IO Theater while still a regular performer. From 2010 to 2012, Thomas joined the cast of several films and television, including a CBS pilot Hitched, Jake and Amir, Fun Size, Road to Nardo, Tha Campaign, Fact Checker’s Unit, Being Flynn, Someone Marry Barry, The Office, The Brass Tea Pot and The Kings of Summer among others.
In 2013, Thomas played a leading role as Richard Hendricks in the HBO’s comedy series Silicon Valley. The comedy centers around Richard Hendricks, a programmer who struggled to manage his startup while competing with larger companies. Silicon Valley received critical acclaim and was nominated for various awards while also thrusting Thomas into the limelight and garnering him many award nominations.
His breakthrough in the movie industry saw him star in more films, including the 2013 Search Party, The Final Girls, The Bronze, and the 2020 B Positive. He made a cameo appearance in The Wolf of Wall Street and a guest appearance in You’re The Worst.
Excluding his comedic works, Thomas has also done several animation works, Verizon Commercials, Theaters, and other notable projects. He streams video games on Twitch and has a gaming YouTube channel.
His personal life
Thomas married Mollie Gates, a costume designer, on August 22, 2015, in his hometown. They had a short-lived open relationship after Mollie filed for a divorce, citing irreconcilable differences.
