In regards to film, Nathalie Emmanuel debuted in a thriller titled Twenty8k.

She was cast in Game of Thrones in 2013, where she took the role of Missandei, an interpreter for Daenerys Targaryen. In 2015, she was promoted to a series regular and was noted as the only prominent woman of color. However, this led to a backlash when Missandei died on the show, which received a lot of controversy due to the way it was framed, placing Missandei in chains, and the lack of other women of color in the series.

Missandei was a former slave who joined the service of Daenerys and who followed her, becoming one of her most trusted confidantes.

In 2015, Emmanuel played Ramsey in Furious 7, part 7 of the Fast and Furious franchise. In addition to this, she was cast as Harriet in Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials.

In 2017, she went back to the role of Ramsey for the Fate of the Furious, the 8th installment, and later for F9.

In 2018, the actress reprised her role as Harriet for Maze Runner: The Death Cure, the third and final chapter in the trilogy.

When she was cast as Missandei, the actress was still working as a shop assistant, although she had also done acting work before this.

Emmanuel won the Empire Award as part of the ensemble cast. She was also nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award as part of the ensemble and for the Primetime Emmy Award as Outstanding Actress.

Emmanuel was included in the 100 sexiest women list in 2013 and 2015.

Missandei’s death was not well-received by fans due to her being the main visible woman of color in the series and due to her death in chains, which for many felt painful as it reminded them of slavery.
