Early life before fame
Sonya was born to an Irish and Native American mother and a Filipino father. She went to school at Kalaheo Elementary School and graduated from high school at Kauai High School. She has also received education in visual communications at the Hawaii Pacific University.
Her career as a model
Sonya won the acclaimed Miss Hawaii Teen USA title on May 16, 2004, at the Waikiki Sheraton Resort. Sonya also represented Hawaii in the coming Miss Teen USA 2004 pageant, which was held in Palm Springs, California, on August 6, 2004. Sonya also placed as the first runner-up at the pageant, which was ultimately won by Miss Louisiana Teen USA, Shelley Hennig.
Sonya’s placements in the pageant were the highest that any Hawaiian girl had placed since Kelly Hu won it in 1985.
Afterward, in 2005 Sonya appeared on the cover of the popular Women’s Health, as well as Outside and Foam magazines.
Her acting career
Sonya Balmores also took an interest in acting and played a series regular on the show Beyond the Break, where she portrayed Kai Kealoha. The series ran on The N and was previously titled Boarding School. Sonya also placed the main antagonist in the 2011 film Soul Surfer, playing Malina Birch. Then in 2014, she guest-starred on the popular Hawaii Five-0 as the bus robber Alana Duncan in the episode titled “Kanalu Hope Loa” and “The Last Break.” Balmores was also cast as a series regular in the popular science-fiction show Inhumans as Auran (2017).
Her film roles throughout the years
Sonya has also appeared in a couple of films throughout the years. Her first official debut was playing Katelynn in the 2008s Ride the Wake (short film), followed by 2011s Soul Surfer, where she portrayed Malina Birch. Then in 2017, she appeared as Kimberly Coyle in the movie Kuleana. This was followed by her appearance as Malia in Den of Thieves (2018). Her most recent appearance was in 2020 when she played Maggie in the short film Sidewinder.
Her most recent T.V. roles have included playing Leanna Owens in Magnum P.I. (2019), portraying Kirby White in 2019s Breckman Rodeo, starring as Angelyne LaCroix on the 2020s FBI: Most Wanted, and most recently, she has announced that she will appear in I Know What You Did Last Summer playing an undisclosed role at this point (2021).
Some trivia
Sonya starred opposite fellow actor Gerard Butler in the film Den of Thieves, and the two actors were rumored to be romantically involved for a short while until they wrapped up filming the series. Sonya hasn’t officially acknowledged these rumors, though.
2021 is looking to be a good year for the talented model and actress, and we can’t wait to see more from her.
