Her early life and career beginnings
Halle was born Maria Halle Berry to an American father and English mother. Her mother, a white English immigrant, was a psychiatric nurse. Her father, Jerome Jessy Berry, an African-American man, was an attendant in the psychiatric ward of the same hospital but later became a bus driver.
The mother raised Halle when she was four and her older sister, Heidi, after a divorce from their abusive father. They are estranged from their father.
She grew up in Oakwood, Ohio, and was a hands-on student of Bedford High School, where she participated in several extracurricular activities. She also attended Cuyahoga Community College.
