To prepare, Powell threw herself into the world of mythology and animal behavior. She studied legends of mermaids and observed predators in nature to build Ryn’s physicality and presence.
To make the underwater scenes believable, she trained with a free diver to learn monofin swimming techniques and practiced fast underwater turns. Her speech patterns for Ryn’s character were inspired by none other than Icelandic singer Björk, giving the mermaid a distinct and otherworldly voice.
Critics and audiences were captivated. IndieWire praised Powell’s ability to express wonder, fear, and threat without saying a word. The Tampa Bay Times called her one of the show’s biggest strengths. Although not all reviews were glowing—TV Guide questioned her dramatic expressions—the show quickly found its audience and became the top new cable drama of spring 2018. It was renewed for a second season in October of that year, with fans eager to see more of Powell’s mesmerizing performance.
A New Chapter Off-Screen
While Eline Powell continues to make waves on-screen, her personal life has also blossomed. In December 2018, she announced her engagement to British director and animator Lee Lennox. A few years later, in April 2021, she shared her pregnancy news on Instagram, and in July of that same year, she welcomed her first child—a baby girl.
