Personal Life

In 1983, Ed Harris married the actress Amy Madigan. They met during the filming of Places in the Heart. In 1993, their daughter Lily Dolores was born.

Professional Life

The actor started his career in the 70s. He originally appeared on stage in plays like Balaam and Kingdom of Earth. Between the mid-70s and the mid-80s, Harris started acting on television as well. He would appear in series like Gibbsville, Delvecchio, The Rockford Files, David Cassidy – Man Undercover, Barnaby Jones, Paris, Lou Grant, Hart to Hart, and American Playhouse.

In 1978, Harris made his debut in film. He appeared in Coma, starring Michael Douglas, while Ed Harris appeared in a small role. In 1980’s Borderline, the actor got a major role opposite Charles Bronson. He got his first leading role in 1981 in Knightriders from George A. Romero. 1983 brought the actor a bigger break with a role in The Right Stuff. In 1984, he was in Places of the Heart, where he met his spouse Amy Madigan.

In 1985, Harris was in Sweet Dreams. The following year, the actor earned the Theatre World Award and the Drama Desk Award for his work in Precious Sons. In 1989, Harris was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for his role in Jackknife.

The actor would star in Glengarry Glen Ross, The Firm, Needful Things, and China Moon. In addition, he would appear in Nixon, earning an Academy Award nomination for the first time.

He would also perform in a starring role in The Truman Show in 1998, which earned him another Oscar nomination and Golden Globe win. In 2000, Harris starred in and directed Pollock, where he portrayed the titular painter, which earned him an Oscar nomination. He would earn a fourth nomination for his role in The Hours. In addition, the actor was featured in A Beautiful Mind and Enemy at the Gates.

In 2005, he received an Emmy and a Golden Globe nomination for his role in Empire Falls. He would also appear in A History of Violence, followed by Copying Beethoven, Gone Baby Gone, and National Treasure: Book of Secrets.

Harris continued as a director with the 2008 film Appaloosa, in which he also starred. He would go on to appear in Game Change, where he portrayed John McCain, earning Emmy nominations and a Golden Globe win.

In 2013, he provided voice acting for Gravity. Starting in 2016, Harris was cast as the Man in Black in Westworld, a sci-fi series from HBO that has received significant critical acclaim.

In 2017, Ed Harris appeared in Mother!, the horror film by Darren Aronofsky opposite Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem. In 2017, he starred in Kodachrome. Harris portrays Admiral Cole in Top Gun: Maverick in 2022.


Ed Harris has been nominated for the Oscars several times.
