Professional Life
Darren Criss started acting when he was just ten years old, debuting in theatre in 1997 in Fanny. He would appear in Do I Hear a Waltz? and Babes in Arms in the following years.
He would appear in various plays in the American Conservatory Theater and then at the University of Michigan. In 2009, he co-founded StarKid Productions, a musical theatre company that became known for its parody and comedy musicals. Criss played Harry Potter in A Very Potter Musical, A Very Potter Sequel, and A Very Potter Senior Year, and also participated as a writer for the projects, being the only writer of music and lyrics of A Very Potter Sequel. Criss debuted on Broadway in 2012 in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, taking over for Daniel Radcliffe, which proved a huge success. In 2015, he played Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch. In 2022, he appeared in David Mamet’s American Buffalo with Sam Rockwell and Laurence Fishburne.
In 2009, Criss made his television debut as Josh Burton in Eastwick. He would appear in Cold Case in 2010.
Between 2010 and 2015, Criss played Blaine Anderson on Glee, the hit musical TV series. He appeared first in season two, and his performance of Teenage Dream became the fastest-selling Glee single. He would appear as a leading character and a romantic interest for the character of Kurt, with the two eventually marrying on the show. In addition, Criss earned an Emmy Award nomination for This Time, an original song he wrote for the Glee finale. In 2012, the actor appeared in Girl Most Likely.
In 2017, Criss played Andrew Cunanan in American Crime Story, also by Glee creator Ryan Murphy. This earned the actor a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie. He also received a Golden Globe for the same category.
In 2020, Criss starred in and was the creator of Royalties, a Quibi original series, bringing back two other StarKid collaborators. In 2021, Criss appeared in Muppets Haunted Mansion.
In 2005, Darren Criss began his solo career. He did covers of classic songs, contemporary music and also did his own creations. In 2010, he released an EP called Human, in the self-titled soul-folk genre. After that, Criss joined the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers, and in 2011, he signed with Sony Music Entertainment. In 2013, the artist did a solo music tour. In 2017, he released an EP titled Homework, which got to the top of indie music charts.
