Roan Dator is a community advocate dedicated to empowering young people through education and meaningful support. As the founder of the Dator Youth Initiative, she has been working to uplift underserved communities in the Philippines by providing access to learning resources, mentorship, and programs that build confidence and resilience. Driven by a strong belief that every child deserves the opportunity to succeed, her work extends beyond education to helping youth navigate the challenges of today’s digital world.
We had the privilege of interviewing her. Here are excerpts from the interview:
Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.
My name is Roan Dator, and I am a community advocate focused on youth empowerment and education in the Philippines. I am the founder of the Dator Youth Initiative, a grassroots effort dedicated to supporting youth in underserved communities through access to educational resources, mentorship, and community-based programs.
While I also maintain a professional career internationally, my long-term mission has always been centered on giving back. My work is driven by a strong belief that every child, regardless of background, deserves access to opportunities that can shape their future. Through the initiative, I collaborate with volunteers and partners to organize donation drives for school supplies and books, and to conduct reading programs that promote literacy, confidence, and a love for learning.
In addition, I advocate for mental resiliency among today’s youth. In a time where young people are exposed to online misinformation, social pressure, and digital challenges, it is important to equip them not only with knowledge, but also with the ability to think critically, build confidence, and navigate adversity with strength.
Please tell us about your journey.
My journey toward this advocacy began at a young age. I have always felt a strong sense of responsibility to help others, especially young individuals who are still developing their sense of identity and direction. Growing up, I was taught the importance of integrity, kindness, and standing firm in one’s values, lessons that have stayed with me throughout my life.
As I gained more life and professional experience, I became increasingly aware of the disparities in access to education and resources, particularly in underserved communities. I saw how these gaps can impact not only academic outcomes but also a child’s confidence and sense of possibility. At the same time, I recognized the growing challenges that youth face in the digital age, including exposure to misleading information and online negativity.
These experiences shaped my decision to take action.
The Dator Youth Initiative was created to provide meaningful support where it is needed most. What started as small efforts, such as donating school supplies and organizing reading activities, has grown into a mission focused on creating lasting impact. The initiative aims to empower young individuals not only through education, but also by helping them develop resilience, self-awareness, and the confidence to navigate challenges.
I view this work as a long-term commitment. It is not about scale or recognition, but about creating consistent, meaningful change in the lives of young people.
Can you share some of your volunteer experiences and how they inspired your advocacy?
One of the most impactful experiences that shaped my perspective took place in 2010, when I volunteered at an orphanage in Pokhara, Nepal. I spent three weeks there during the winter, living alongside approximately twenty children.
During that time, I was immersed in their daily lives. I helped teach, played with them, walked them to school each day, and picked them up afterward. It was a simple routine, but one that allowed me to truly connect with the children and understand their environment.
The conditions were challenging. There were frequent power outages, and the cold weather, influenced by the region’s proximity to the Himalayan mountain range, made daily life even more difficult. There was no hot water for showers, and basic comforts that many take for granted were not available.
Despite these hardships, the children showed resilience, joy, and a deep appreciation for even the smallest moments. Their strength and positivity left a lasting impression on me.
That experience was life-changing. It gave me a deeper understanding of how environment, access, and support can shape a child’s outlook and opportunities. It also reinforced my belief that consistent presence, encouragement, and care can make a meaningful difference.
Many of the values behind the Dator Youth Initiative are rooted in that experience. It reminded me that sometimes, the most powerful impact comes not from large-scale efforts, but from simply showing up, being present, and investing time in others.
Any message for our readers
Investing in the youth, especially those in underserved communities, is one of the most meaningful ways to create lasting change. Even the smallest effort can have a ripple effect on a child’s future.
For young people, I want to share this message. Your voice matters, your experiences are valid, and your future is not defined by the challenges you face or the opinions around you. It is important to stay grounded in truth, to continue learning, and to surround yourself with people who uplift and support you.
