Meet Sia Bharadwaj, the Teen Pushing for Racial Equality in Sports with ‘Kicks and Goals’

In the world of sports, where dreams take flight and determination paves the path to success, one teen is making strides to ensure that every girl, regardless of her background, has the opportunity to pursue her passion. Meet Sia Bharadwaj, the founder of Kicks and Goals, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting soccer and increasing diversity in the sport. With a heart full of passion and a mind focused on change, Sia is on a mission to break down barriers and create a more inclusive sports environment for young girls around the world.

A Journey Fueled by Passion and Determination

Sia Bharadwaj’s story begins in San Ramon, California, where she was born and raised. At the tender age of eight, she discovered a love for soccer that would shape her life in profound ways. As a young girl of South Asian descent, Sia quickly realized that the soccer world was not as diverse as she had hoped. The lack of representation made her journey challenging, as she had to work twice as hard to be taken seriously as a player. However, these challenges only fueled her determination to succeed and make a difference in the sport she loved.

Growing up, Sia faced numerous obstacles that many athletes of color encounter. From subtle microaggressions to outright discrimination, she experienced the harsh realities of being a minority in the sports world. Despite these difficulties, her passion for soccer never waned. Instead, it strengthened her resolve to create change and provide opportunities for others who might face similar challenges.

The Birth of Kicks and Goals: A Vision for Inclusion

Sia’s experiences on the soccer field inspired her to create Kicks and Goals, an organization that seeks to empower young girls from all backgrounds to participate in soccer and other sports. The vision behind Kicks and Goals is simple yet profound: to break down the barriers that prevent girls from pursuing their dreams in sports and to promote diversity and inclusion in every aspect of the game.

Through Kicks and Goals, Sia aims to provide a supportive environment where young girls can develop their skills, build confidence, and find a sense of belonging. The organization offers a variety of programs, including soccer clinics, mentorship opportunities, and community outreach initiatives, all designed to inspire and empower the next generation of female athletes.

Sia believes that every girl deserves the chance to play, regardless of her ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or background. By creating a space where diversity is celebrated, and inclusion is the norm, Kicks and Goals is helping to shape a new narrative in the sports world—one where girls from all walks of life can thrive and succeed.

The Silent Struggle: Microaggressions and Their Impact on Athletes of Color

While Sia’s journey has been marked by success and achievement, it has not been without its challenges. One of the most significant obstacles she and other athletes of color face is the pervasive issue of microaggressions in sports. These subtle, often unintentional acts of discrimination can have a profound impact on an athlete’s mental health, self-worth, and overall performance.

Microaggressions can take many forms, from racial stereotypes to unfair treatment by coaches or teammates. For athletes of color, these experiences can create a hostile environment that goes beyond the physical demands of the sport. The cumulative effect of microaggressions can lead to feelings of isolation, frustration, and a constant need to prove oneself.

In Sia’s case, these challenges only reinforced her commitment to creating change. She recognized the need for greater awareness, understanding, and reform in the sports world. Through Kicks and Goals, Sia is not only providing opportunities for young girls but also advocating for a more inclusive and respectful sports culture.

Empowering Change: A Call to Action

Sia Bharadwaj’s journey is a testament to the power of passion, determination, and the desire to create positive change. Through Kicks and Goals, she is breaking down barriers and empowering young girls to pursue their dreams in sports, regardless of the obstacles they may face.

But Sia’s work is far from done. She believes that real change requires a collective effort from everyone involved in the sports community. Coaches, athletes, and organizations must take proactive measures to confront and eliminate instances of microaggressions and discrimination. By fostering a culture of respect, inclusion, and diversity, we can create a sports environment where every athlete has the opportunity to succeed and be recognized for their talents.

Sia’s story is not just about soccer—it’s about the broader fight for equality and inclusion in all aspects of life. Through her work with Kicks and Goals, she is inspiring a new generation of female athletes to break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and pursue their dreams with confidence and determination.

As Sia continues her mission, she invites others to join her in creating a world where every girl has the chance to play, succeed, and make her mark in the sports world. Together, we can build a future where diversity is celebrated, and every athlete, regardless of their background, is given the opportunity to shine.

We had the privilege of interviewing the founder. Here are excerpts from the interview:

Hi, Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.

Hi there! My name is Sia Bharadwaj, and I am the founder of Kicks and Goals, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting soccer and increasing diversity in the sport. Our mission is to break down barriers and create a world where every girl, regardless of her background, has the opportunity to pursue her dreams in sports.

Please tell us more about you and your work.

I was born and raised in San Ramon, California, and my passion for soccer began when I was just eight years old. As a young girl of South Asian descent, I quickly realized that there were not many people who looked like me in the soccer world. This fueled my determination to not only succeed in the sport but also to create change. Through Kicks and Goals, I work to provide opportunities for young girls from all backgrounds to participate in soccer, helping them overcome the barriers that I faced and promoting diversity and inclusion in sports.

Please tell us about your journey.

My journey began with a deep love for soccer, but as I grew up, I encountered challenges that many athletes of color face. Despite these obstacles, I remained committed to my passion and realized that I wanted to do more than just play the sport—I wanted to change it. This led to the creation of Kicks and Goals, where my goal is to empower young girls and create a more inclusive sports environment. The journey has been challenging but incredibly rewarding, as I see the positive impact we’re making in the lives of young athletes.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

The strategies that have helped me succeed include perseverance, a strong belief in my mission, and the ability to connect with others who share my vision. I’ve also focused on creating a supportive community around Kicks and Goals, where everyone is committed to breaking down barriers in sports. Additionally, being adaptable and open to learning has allowed me to navigate the challenges and continue growing the organization.
