A Band Formed Through Unlikely Connections
Monocene was founded in 2023 by Joerg Grote on vocals and guitar, Igor Zimic on bass and backing vocals, and Stjepan Vukušić on drums. Although the band officially began recently, the stories that shaped its members stretch far beyond those first rehearsals.
Each member arrived carrying years of personal and musical experience. One had spent years performing cover songs in bars across Croatia. Another had played drums in cramped Zagreb basements while chasing creative freedom. The third explored several musical worlds, moving through jazz, swing, metal, and rock before finding the right artistic home.
What makes Monocene’s beginning remarkable is the emotional state each member was in before the band existed. None of them knew each other at the time. All three were dealing with intense personal struggles and searching for something that could help them cope with life. Music became that connection.
Their chemistry formed almost instantly. The moment Stjepan walked into the room and recognized Igor as someone from the same region of Croatia, the atmosphere changed immediately. He spoke to him in Croatian without hesitation, creating a memory that still feels unreal to the band today.
That sense of fate shaped the group from the start. The members promised each other they would never limit their creativity. Every influence they loved would have space inside the music. Despite experimenting with different sounds and moods, Monocene developed a signature style that remains unmistakably their own.
More Than I Own Explores Identity And Survival
Following the release of their debut EP Superior in 2024, Monocene returned with their first studio album, More Than I Own, released on January 24, 2026. Recorded between winter 2024 and autumn 2025 with producer Mike Jordan, the album presents an emotional and carefully structured journey across 13 songs.
Tracks such as Friction, Serotonin, My Safe Place, and Awake explore emotional exhaustion, anxiety, and the struggle to remain grounded in a demanding world. The music shifts between intense guitar-driven moments and stripped-back arrangements that leave space for vulnerability to breathe. That balance gives the album its emotional power.
The record also addresses themes that come directly from the members’ lives. Alienation, exclusion, racism, displacement, and depression are woven into the lyrics with striking honesty. These are not distant concepts used for dramatic effect. They are experiences the band members have personally endured.
At the center of the album lies one defining question: what remains when every material possession disappears? The title More Than I Own reflects that search for identity beyond status, wealth, or external validation. The album does not attempt to provide easy solutions. Instead, it invites listeners to sit with difficult emotions and confront the same questions themselves.
Critics have already responded strongly to the project. Vaultlab.it described Monocene’s work as a voice that stands out through “depth, honesty, and tangible emotional urgency.” That reaction reflects exactly what the band hopes listeners will hear in the music.

We had the privilege of interviewing the Music Artists. Here are excerpts from the interview:
Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourselves and tell us what you do.
We are MONOCENE, an alternative rock band from Germany. Our music combines heavy guitars, atmospheric soundscapes, and emotional songwriting. We create music that reflects personal struggles, inner conflicts, isolation, and the pressures of modern life. We want every song to feel honest and intense, both emotionally and sonically.
Please tell us about your band’s development.
The three of us have all been through a lot, both musically and personally. The fact that we found each other is either an incredible coincidence or fate, depending on how you look at it. The three of us didn’t know each other at the time; we were all in very, very difficult personal situations and were each looking for something to help us cope – and that just happens to be music. For us, it was ‘love at first sight’. The fact that Igor and Stjepan both come from the same part of Croatia was an even more incredible coincidence. They didn’t know each other at all beforehand. Stjepan walked in, looked at Igor, and spoke to him straight away in Croatian. Unbelievable.
Musically, we promised each other we’d try out everything we enjoy. You can hear that on the album too. Nevertheless, we always have something distinctive, our signature sound, so to speak. We’re very proud of that.
Our songs mainly revolve around the things we’ve experienced: alienation, exclusion, racism, and depression. But above all, the album revolves around the central question: what do I really possess when I strip away all the material things? What remains?
So for us, music is always therapy too 😉
What strategies have helped you on your path to success?
One key strategy was staying true to ourselves rather than trying to meet expectations. We focused on making music that truly represents who we are.
Consistency also played a major role. Even when progress seemed slow, we kept writing, recording, refining, and releasing music. Building a project from scratch requires patience.
Another key factor was learning a wide range of skills beyond music, including production, visuals, branding, video production, and digital promotion. In today’s music industry, artists often have to build a whole world around their music.
We’ve been at this for a few years now; we’re no longer in our 20s, but in our late 30s and early 40s. Life experience helps us not to take things so seriously and to enjoy them more.
You know better how to deal with certain things and don’t dwell on nonsense or negative things and feelings.
