We had the pleasure of interviewing the artist. Here are excerpts from the interview:
Hi, Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.
Hi, I’m MRE, and it is pronounced like Mari. I write and record my own songs. I try to produce where I can. It’s a learning process, but I think at the end of the day, it’s a good skill to have. I sing/rap/feel all that jazz. I try not to stay confined to one genre, but I mostly do R&B and hip-hop. Some of my personal inspirations are Leon Thomas, James Fauntleroy, and Frank Ocean. I aspire to write and produce songs as amazing as they do.
Please tell us about your latest single.
My new single, “Mama,“ is mainly about longing for a connection and having the patience for someone who may be nervous or a little self-conscious. I’ve known that feeling of anxiety well; it can be hard to let your true self show when you’ve been through so much.
Please tell us about your journey.
I’ve always loved music. My mom has always sung for our church since I was a baby. I remember being maybe 2 years old when she put out her CD. She took me to the studio and I got to watch her process of creating music. It stuck with me all these years. I started making silly songs/mixtapes in my junior year of high school. I just started taking it seriously in 2022. My girlfriend of the time told me that people would want to hear the things I wrote and that all it would take is a leap of faith for me to connect with people, so I braved it and now we’re here. I record all of my songs from home in my little closet, lol. Gotta make do with what’s around.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
Consistency. I don’t ever stop writing. Someone asked me what I do when I get stuck on a song, and I found it difficult to understand, not because I don’t get stuck, but because I usually pause and work on something else until I find my rhythm in the other song. I work so much that I don’t often find myself struggling to work through songs. 5. If you’re reading this, thank you for checking me out.
