We had the pleasure of interviewing Millxpressionz. Here are the excerpts from the interview.
Hi Mill, Great to have you with us today! Please share with our readers about yourself.
What’s up! My name is Jamil, but you can call me Millxpressionz or Mill for short. I’ve had so many nickname changes since high school…Jae Millz, Millz, Millz_Mula or just Mula. I’ve grown a lot since then and now go by my artist name, Millxpressionz, which I even contemplated while writing this lol. As mentioned earlier, my musical journey first began during my sophomore year of college but didn’t become something I took seriously or made public until June of 2022 (rather recently). It all began in church and slowly grew from there. From stage singing to picking up the guitar, to then writing my own songs/instrumentals and then sharing them! I’ve released an album that is largely accumulated from music I made from my personal computer from 2016 through 2022. The majority of these songs were mixed and mastered by me, besides We Hold Our Head High, Let it Go and Difference. I released these with prior dictations that I would never do, but I thought sharing them would reveal more of my musical talents and styles. Although they were older songs and mixed poorly, in my opinion, the musical ideas and vibe are still very good if you ask me. I now have one of the best engineers on the East Coast helping your boy drop this heat you’re hearing!
Please tell us more about your journey.
Not to sound cliche, but this is GOOD music. Coming from a former athlete turned musician after a new encounter with God. I was inspired by brothers and sisters of like talents, and I now write RnB, Pop, Hip Hop/Rap, and dab of Jazz music here and there. My music revolves around the gospel and a walk with Jesus, a message of my love, struggles, and or admiration of the like. Dive deep into profound lyrics, catchy hooks, melodies, and a warm welcome to the embrace and walk of a man who is dedicated to God.
Music has been a comforter of mine since the days of my youth. After the age of 6, it was only Pops and I cruising through the world, taking on life’s challenges. Fast forward twenty or so years later, and I find myself now distributing music to uplift and comfort others while passing through adversity. The first song I ever wrote was in my sophomore year of college during an ineligible season of football. Soon after, in my senior year of college, I was inspired by a friend to buy a guitar and learned some of my first songs. Post graduation, I ran into a Pastor who pushed me to sing in church, and from there, it was a done deal! After being introduced to GarageBand in the summer of 2015 (apple iPhone version), I started creating songs for the congregation to play and share for their car rides and at home. I haven’t stopped writing since then, and I continue to inspire people through God’s word and the gifts he has given me through singing, songwriting, guitar playing, and my overall talent with the creation of music. This is my musical journey; come join me on my never-ending voyage!
Please tell us about your latest single, Lose Yourself.
Fast forward to my latest single, Lose Yourself. No, I wasn’t trying to be like Eminem, but Mantra named the beat “Lose Yourself,” and I decided to use it as the song subject. This song describes the battle of my walk with Christ, the idea of self, and God wanting us to deny ourselves to take heed to his will for our lives. As said, “For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.” If we try to understand what is being said, I believe Jesus is speaking on our lives individually, losing self, sin, certain behaviors that once were part of ourselves, and denying those deeds to obey God.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
The strategies that contributed toward my success have been my dedication to putting my best foot forward with singing, songwriting, and nailing a solid performance at the studio. With the help of an awesome engineer, I can distribute quality music that my listeners enjoy engaging with. The studio is like a free space to be yourself, be open, and bring all of life’s concepts together in a way YOU choose… BE CREATIVE!
