Australian band Deadheat Rocks the Indie Scene with ‘The Phils’: A Nostalgic Pop-Punk Revival

The Phils is the newest release from Deadheat, an Australian band that’s making some noise in the indie music scene. The band is a pop-punk group that draws inspiration from 90’s and early 2000s music.

Deadheat is a four-member band, featuring Adam on the vocals and the guitar, Ricky on the drums, Drew on the bass, and Brad on the guitar as well. The group hails from Sunshine Coast, in Queensland, Australia.

The Phils is a silly, fun song with a lot of heart, nevertheless. It’s a story about childhood and the relationships between boys and fathers. The track is pretty solid with the lyrics and the sound and comes from a silly premise that transformed into something unique. Brad and Adam realized that they both had dads named Phil, and that developed into a fun song with a chorus with a call-and-response, asking if that’s true of someone in the audience. The video and the song follow this premise to its fun conclusion with a nostalgia-infused track that owes a lot to early pop-punk from the 90’s and the 2000’s.

The video also follows the same aesthetic, with an intentional DIY style that is a perfect fit for the fun and nostalgic tone of The Phils. The video was done by the band with just the right type of production and is clearly a throwback to an earlier time. This gives it a sense of authenticity that can often be missing from bigger productions.

The Phils is a fun song for all listeners, especially fans of pop-punk, 90s and 2000s music, and, perhaps, all those people who have a dad named Phil. But that’s not a requirement to enjoy this track, made with a lot of heart and a fun vibe.

The Phils, like other tracks produced by Deadheat, is a song full of energy, heart, and sheer electric power. With a punk sound, this is a track that is sure to thrill fans of the genre. Deadheat knows exactly what to do, as they have a long professional trajectory, but this hasn’t made them lose that rebellious spark or change directions. They have been continuously growing and improving their music.

Deadheat

Deadheat actually started way back in 2012. Ricky met Adam while playing soccer, and the two of them started jamming. Ricky had played with Drew in a couple of bands over the years and invited him to join. The three of them had a real spark and, along with former guitarist Andrew, wrote a bunch of music and played shows across South East Queensland between 2012 and 2014, until Andrew left the band and moved overseas.

The band stopped playing together despite the three of them trying to bring iterations of Deadheat back over the next decade. Fast forward to 2022, when a message from Drew to Ricky prompted the three of them to get back together, jam old songs, and work on new material. Ricky invited his mate Brad to join the band at the start of 2023, and since then, the band has been back in full force, playing shows and writing the best music of their career.

We had the pleasure of interviewing them; here are the excerpts from the interview:

Please tell us about your latest single ‘the Phils’.

Our latest single ‘the Phils’ is a nostalgic song about our childhoods with our fathers. It has a bit of a silly premise – Brad and Adam both realized their dads have the same first name, so we came up with the idea of writing a song about having a dad named Phil, where both Brad and Adam would sing about their dad and then do a call-and-response style chorus asking the crowd if their dad’s name is also Phil. The music itself is a a throwback to early 2000’s pop-punk and we wanted the video to have a very DIY feel to it. We filmed it in our jam space with some clips of Adam and Brad at their dad’s houses re-enacting lines from the song.

What strategies contributed to your success?

Success for us means that we still love playing music together and hanging out as a band and as individuals. We’ve created this super friendly, supportive environment where we can share ideas and critiques and push ourselves and each other to improve while still enjoying every minute of it. So long as we get to hang out, write music, play shows, joke around, and have a laugh – we’re happy.
