“Count Your Blessings” Brings a Message of Hope

The Detroit-based singer, songwriter, and producer has built a reputation for creating music that speaks directly to the realities people face, and this song continues that tradition.

Driven by a smooth mid-tempo stepping rhythm, the track offers an uplifting listening experience from beginning to end. Warm instrumentation, layered harmonies, and Hayes’ soulful vocals create a welcoming atmosphere that encourages reflection while maintaining a joyful energy.

At the center of the song is a simple yet powerful idea. Gratitude has the ability to reshape perspective. The message serves as a reminder that blessings often surround people even during difficult circumstances.

The song’s appeal extends beyond traditional worship settings. Its contemporary production and positive spirit make it equally fitting for family gatherings, community celebrations, personal devotion time, and everyday listening. The result is a recording that inspires while remaining accessible to a wide audience.

Hayes has often used her music as a form of ministry, and “Count Your Blessings” reflects that purpose clearly. Every lyric points listeners toward appreciation, faith, and renewed hope.

Continuing a Legacy Built on Faith and Family

Ellen Hayes’ musical story began long before she entered the recording studio. Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, she grew up in a household where music played a central role in family life. As the youngest of ten children, she was constantly surrounded by musicians and singers who nurtured her love for music from an early age.

Her late mother introduced her to the piano and inspired her first musical explorations. By the age of sixteen, Hayes recognized a calling to use music as a ministry tool. That calling continued to grow as she matured both spiritually and artistically.

In her early adult years, she began recording music and directing the choir at her home church, where her late father, Pastor Charles Edison, served as pastor. Those experiences helped shape her into the versatile artist she is today. Beyond performing, Hayes has developed skills as a songwriter, composer, arranger, producer, and choir director.

Family remains an important part of her creative journey. As a wife and mother of eight, she frequently collaborates with her children and extended family members on musical projects. This shared passion has transformed music into a family ministry that spans generations.

That dedication to faith and family can be heard throughout her body of work. Whether creating original songs or directing choirs, Hayes consistently focuses on messages that encourage, uplift, and strengthen listeners.

A Career Marked by Growth and Recognition

Over the years, Ellen Hayes has continued expanding her influence within gospel music. Her previous release, “Another Chance,” became a significant milestone in her career. The song earned recognition on both Billboard and MediaBase Gospel charts, remaining among the Top 100 while receiving positive reviews and industry honors.

Its success also led to inclusion in the prestigious GMWA National Songbook, a meaningful achievement that highlighted Hayes’ growing impact within the gospel community.

In 2025, she further showcased her versatility with the release of “Silent Night,” a holiday duet featuring her son, Darryl Hayes Jr., professionally known as D.E.R.Y.L. The collaboration reflected her commitment to blending family, ministry, and music into a unified artistic vision.

Now, with “Count Your Blessings” serving as the lead single from her upcoming album ‘Behind My Eyes’ that is expected to be released in September 2026, Hayes continues building momentum while remaining true to her spiritual foundation. The release demonstrates both artistic growth and an unwavering commitment to sharing messages that inspire faith.

We had the privilege of interviewing the artist. Here are excerpts from the interview:

Thank you so much for joining us today! Can you tell us about the origins of your musical journey? What initially inspired you to pursue a career in music, and how did you get started?

My musical journey started at the tender age of 3 years old. My mother playing on our home piano is what initially drew me and inspired my passion for music. My start in the industry came later in my early twenties. I became part of a family gospel group and sang for a twenty-year span with them. After which, I decided to do a solo project, which brings me to where I am today.

Who are some of your biggest musical influences, and how have they shaped your unique sound? Can you share a specific instance where one of these influences had a significant impact on your music?

Some of the biggest musical influences in my life are Walter Hawkins, The Winans, and Commissioned. Anita Baker, Yolanda Adams, Aretha Franklin. Chaka Khan, Natalie Cole. I have listened to and sung these artists’ songs from about 20 years old till now. Anita Baker had a song, “Only for a While,” that got me through some tough times after losing my older brother.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

One of the biggest strategies that helped me on my musical journey was consistency. I kept creating, learning, and pushing forward even during difficult seasons. Building genuine relationships, staying connected with my audience, and remaining true to my message also played a major role. Most importantly, I learned that success is not only about numbers—it’s about creating music that truly reaches and helps people.
