Ken Tae LaRose’s ‘Through My Grandmother’s Eyes The Queen’ Is a Powerful Novel That Celebrates Family, Destiny, and Strength

Ken Tae LaRose’s Through My Grandmother’s Eyes The Queen is a compelling work of fiction that blends family drama, emotional resilience, and hidden heritage into an engaging narrative. Across its 18 chapters, the novel invites readers into a world where loss becomes the doorway to purpose and long-buried truths reshape one woman’s future.

A Life Changed by One Phone Call

The story follows Stephanie, a successful lead prosecutor for the City of Biloxi who has always believed she understood her family history. Orphaned at a young age after losing her parents in an automobile accident, she was lovingly raised by her grandparents in what appeared to be a modest middle-class household. Their guidance, discipline, and unwavering support helped shape her into a respected professional and compassionate woman.

Everything changes when Stephanie receives a heartbreaking phone call at 3 a.m. informing her that her beloved grandmother has passed away. The devastating loss shakes the very foundation of her world, leaving her overwhelmed by grief and uncertainty. As the emotional weight settles, another unexpected revelation begins to unfold. The grandmother she mourns had protected extraordinary family secrets, and those hidden truths carry responsibilities Stephanie never imagined.

The opening chapter immediately establishes a deeply emotional atmosphere. The sorrow of losing a cherished family member is heightened by mysterious moments that suggest her grandmother’s influence extends beyond death. This blend of heartfelt emotion and subtle supernatural elements creates an intriguing beginning that encourages readers to continue discovering the family’s remarkable history.

Secrets, Heritage, and the Call of Destiny

At the heart of the novel lies the powerful idea that some secrets exist to safeguard both people and their rightful inheritance. Stephanie, whose full name is Adaeze Edo, gradually discovers that her Nigerian family heritage holds far greater significance than she ever realized. Her grandparents had carefully protected her from dangers while preparing her for responsibilities connected to her true identity.

As the story unfolds, Stephanie faces challenges that demand emotional strength, courage, and wisdom. The transition from an accomplished prosecutor to someone expected to reclaim what belongs to her family forms the emotional backbone of the novel. Every revelation forces her to question what she believed about her upbringing while embracing a destiny that has been waiting since birth.

Ken skillfully explores universal themes of family loyalty, sacrifice, identity, and personal growth. The novel reminds readers that life’s greatest challenges often arrive unexpectedly, requiring ordinary people to discover extraordinary resilience. The emphasis on honoring family traditions while stepping confidently into leadership gives the story both emotional depth and cultural richness.

Readers who appreciate stories centered on hidden legacies, meaningful relationships, and strong female protagonists will likely find Stephanie’s journey especially rewarding. The balance between mystery, emotional storytelling, and family history keeps the narrative engaging throughout its 18 chapters.

Emotional Storytelling with Lasting Meaning

One of the novel’s strongest qualities is its ability to connect emotional experiences with larger life lessons. Stephanie’s grief never feels isolated from her growth. Instead, every difficult moment becomes another step toward understanding her purpose and accepting responsibilities that extend far beyond her personal ambitions.

The dedication to the author’s grandmothers adds another heartfelt dimension to the book. It reflects the genuine appreciation for the influence grandparents have in shaping future generations, reinforcing one of the novel’s central messages about legacy and unconditional love.

The storytelling also highlights how family history can remain hidden for reasons that only become clear with time. Rather than presenting secrets simply for dramatic effect, the novel treats them as acts of protection, preserving both identity and justice until the proper moment arrives. This perspective gives the narrative emotional authenticity while encouraging readers to reflect on the unseen sacrifices made by previous generations.
