Today, we have the pleasure of interviewing Boris Cerdan, an Independent Game Developer and Twitch Streamer from Toulouse, France.
Hi, please tell us about your journey.
My crazy journey started in March 2020. I just had lost a great job opportunity because of the pandemic outbreak, and I was stuck in my parent’s home because of the lockdown in France. I started thinking about turning my life around.
Maybe the time had come to try and make old dreams come true? You see, when I was a little kid, I used to love making amateur 2D games with a little piece of software called RPG Maker, so I thought, why not get back into game development professionally?
Why not take advantage of all this free time on my hands, and learn new skills? So I started taking programming courses online, together with some 2D pixel-art classes.
I was hooked. In fact, throughout this learning process, which lasted around two months, I barely slept at all!
In the middle of this, I also started working on my first game project and falling in love with the idea a little more every day.
It got to the point where I had a playable prototype and some cool art around it, so I decided to launch a crowdfunding campaign to see if anyone would be interested in the project.
That is how I financed my very first game through Kickstarter: ‘Aeternum Vale,’ a 2D pixel-art adventure game inspired by 2D platformer like Hollow Knight and funny, emotional games like Undertale.
Please share your experience of running the crowdfunding campaign.
With this crowdfunding campaign, I gained something far more valuable than money: a small community of like-minded people who lived and breathed Indie games.
The bond was instantaneous, and later down the road, I would decide to start streaming my creative process and some indie gaming on Twitch.
What a blessing to be able to create the game of your dreams and share your ideas with passionate people daily! Platforms like Twitch & Discord are truly amazing to connect people that are sharing interests together!
Now, my objective is to share my story and expand this community, maybe inspire people to take a game development journey of their own, or simply to come and enjoy!
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
I have always been a firm believer in two things: Passion & Determination.
If you think about it every morning when you get up, every night when you go to sleep and are willing to put in the work: go for it!
It simply is about how bad you want it and what you will do to enable yourself to get there.
