But Artful Brewing is more than just a brewery that tantalizes taste buds with epic beers. It also embraces a strong connection to the dynamic art culture. The founders plan to collaborate with local artists to design visually captivating labels and artwork for their beer releases. They will also host limited-release art collaborations and art shows to showcase the talent within the community.
Let’s get to know the members of Artful Brewing. Jon Cornell, who spent the majority of his adult life in Carmichael, California, developed a deep passion for beer while attending the local community college. A self-proclaimed craft beer nerd, Jon even created a comic book called “Hop Hero,” featuring a protagonist who gains superpowers after consuming craft beer. Inspired by the comic book, he founded Hop Hero Homebrew Supply, a homebrew supply company that quickly gained popularity and disrupted the Sacramento homebrew community. Although unforeseen challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic led to the closure of his company, Jon’s brewing skills landed him a position as head brewer at a local brewery.
Brian Vermont, on the other hand, discovered his love for beer during a trip to Oktoberfest in Germany back in 2009. This experience ignited a passion for the craft, and Brian soon found himself immersed in the world of beer recipes and homebrewing. When he wasn’t working at The Brewmeister, a competitor’s homebrew supply shop, or brewing his own delectable creations, he embarked on journeys across the country, exploring art shows and visiting craft breweries. Additionally, Brian developed a talent for handcrafting jewelry, showcasing and selling his art pieces nationwide.
Completing the trio is Bob Thomas, whose entry into the world of homebrewing brought him into contact with both Jon and Brian. Bob frequented Hop Hero and The Brewmeister, striking up fast friendships with the other two passionate beer aficionados. Jon and Brian were impressed by Bob’s fervor for beer and his skill in constructing advanced brewing systems, which elevated the quality and flavor of his homebrewed creations.
After their individual ventures faced challenges, the three friends reunited as local brewing experts and consultants for a startup brewery. This experience reignited their passions and motivated them to develop intricate beer recipes and dynamic brewery plans that would have been difficult to accomplish individually. Although the startup brewery faced internal issues and eventually withdrew, Jon, Brian, and Bob were already fueled by their shared vision. They decided it was time to embark on their own journey, determined to create a brewery that would redefine the beer landscape.
So why Carmichael? For Jon, Carmichael holds a special place in his heart as the birthplace of his beer passion. With only one brewpub restaurant and no craft breweries like those found in the rest of Sacramento County, Carmichael presents an opportunity to bring something unique to the community. This urban area boasts lush forest parks and a higher concentration of large trees between houses, offering respite from the scorching temperatures of Northern California.
