‘Take-5 Self-defense Concept’ by Dr. Antonio N. Sherman: A Game-Changer in Real-World Combat

Self-defense is about preparation, not perfection. Dr. Antonio N. Sherman emphasizes this crucial truth in his practical and groundbreaking book, Take-5 Self-defense Concept: Nikida’s Mudo-Kan Waza-Ryu Martial Art. With decades of experience in martial arts, military service, and executive protection, Sherman crafted a system that swiftly and effectively neutralizes threats—within five seconds or less.

Why the “Take-5” Concept?

In the world of martial arts and personal safety, there’s often an overemphasis on style purity. Sherman, however, advocates an entirely different approach. Drawing from a rich background in multiple fighting systems, both domestic and international, he argues that being locked into a single style sets unnecessary limitations. In reality, attackers don’t follow structured moves or predictable patterns—they act unpredictably. Sherman’s method is straightforward: the situation dictates the response.

As a former U.S. Army Staff Sergeant and a veteran executive protection specialist, Sherman knows the significance of swift, decisive action firsthand. His military tenure, including service as a security escort for dignitaries and roles within the United Nations Command Joint Security Area Forces, reinforced his belief in adaptability. His extensive civilian experience, covering uniformed security and personal close protection, further honed this perspective.

Sherman highlights that, in real-world scenarios, every second counts. If you hesitate, you’re already behind. This understanding drove him to develop the “Take-5” system, rigorously tested and refined in the field by Sherman himself and other active protection specialists. The key to his system isn’t elaborate techniques—it’s rapid resolution. The goal? Neutralize any threat in less than five seconds. Period.

A Practical Approach to Self-defense

Sherman’s book isn’t about mastering complicated routines or demonstrating flashy moves. Instead, it prioritizes practical effectiveness. This method makes the “Take-5” concept accessible for everyone—from complete beginners to seasoned martial artists seeking a more adaptive approach.

What sets Sherman’s self-defense philosophy apart is his insistence on real-world readiness. It’s not about competing or showcasing superior skills—it’s about swiftly and safely neutralizing threats. Sherman’s extensive professional background in tactical response and executive protection highlights the critical need for efficiency. Hand-to-hand engagements are unpredictable, chaotic, and dangerous, demanding a response that’s both rapid and effective.

The practicality of the “Take-5” approach is underscored by Sherman’s extensive training and credentials. His robust background spans Emergency Management Institute training (FEMA), Tactical Response Officer training, Carolina Medical & Tactical Training, and advanced handgun and close-quarters combat programs. His vast experience ensures readers aren’t just getting theoretical advice—they’re accessing insights tested in countless real-world scenarios.

We had the privilege of interviewing Dr. Antonio N. Sherman. Here are excerpts from the interview.

Hi Dr. Antonio, It’s great to have you with us today! Please share about yourself with our readers.

Hello, I am a multi-talented artist, a retired U.S. Army veteran, and an active executive protection specialist. Additionally, I am an accomplished martial artist and a published author in various genres.

Please tell us about your book.

As a dedicated martial artist, I am deeply committed to the arts, having studied both foreign and domestic styles, both as a fighter and a teacher. I have learned not to confine myself to one particular style of fighting or art form, as doing so imposes limitations instead of providing freedom. Relying strictly on established boundaries and guidelines can be counterproductive, especially since real-world threats do not adhere to predictable patterns. This rigidity can render years of training ineffective. Survival doesn’t solely favor the fittest; it favors those who are prepared.

As a trained executive protection specialist, it is vital that I am confident in my skills during close-quarters combat (CQC). If I have to think about what to do in a critical moment, it’s already too late; I would be playing catch-up.

I must emphasize that the “Take-5” concept of self-defense has been evaluated in real-world situations by both myself and other active protection specialists. The “Take-5” concept suggests that any engagement in hand-to-hand combat should be resolved as quickly as possible. Each aspect of this concept is designed to ensure efficiency and effectiveness.

Please share your journey with our readers.

Honestly, that’s the subject of my next book. It’s not solely about the destination; it’s about everything that happens along the way. Moreover, my journey is still in progress.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

The strategies that have helped me the most are discipline and passion. I never view a closed door as a dead end. If a door closes, I look for a window; if a window closes, I search for another door; and if both are closed, I forge my own path.

Any message for our readers?

For the martial arts audience, this book explores the freedom of expression within the martial arts. However, there’s also a section included that speaks to others—prepare yourself; it’s impactful.

Never give up on your dreams. Believe in yourself, even when no one else does. It’s your dream, not theirs, and don’t let anyone dictate what success means to you.

Thank you so much, Dr. Antonio, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
