We had the pleasure of interviewing Sati Achath. Here are the excerpts from the interview.
Hi Sati, Great to have you with us today! Please share with our readers about yourself.
Hi, I am an Indian American artist. I grew up in Kerala, India, where I had my schooling, graduation, and post-graduation. Later, I did a Master of International Relations from France and a Master of Science and MBA from the USA. I joined the prestigious Indian Revenue Service (IRS) in 1980 and worked as Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax for eight years. Since 1992, I have been working for the World Bank in Washington, D.C., in various positions, including as Tax Administration Specialist and Project Evaluation Specialist.
I have several hobbies, including ventriloquism, hand shadows, magic, cartooning, and caricaturing. I am also an author and a motivational speaker. I have been recognized by the U.S. Government as a ‘Person of Extraordinary Ability.’
As a hand shadows master, I have developed this art form by creating shadow caricatures of more than 100 celebrities ranging from Michael Jackson to Mother Teresa, and hand shadow images of about 50 birds and animals. I have been featured in Late Show with David Letterman, and I was also a quarter-finalist on NBC’s 2008 America’s Got Talent.
I have been a ventriloquism performer for more than two decades, and I have performed in different countries and appeared on several television channels.
I am a professional cartoonist and a caricaturist. My cartoons and caricatures have been published in more than 25 newspapers in the US and India. I am also a magician who has performed magic on many stages in the US and India.
I am the author of eight books, including Dazzling Destinations. 12 Qualities of Highly Successful People; Leadership Traits: Winning Strategies of 50 World Class Leaders; 18 Simple Steps for Efficient Time Management, and Fun with Hand Shadows.
Please share with us more about your journey.
I grew up in a small town, Thrissur, in Kerala, India. While growing up, I had the privilege of getting a good education because of the support and encouragement from my parents and siblings. They were also very supportive and appreciative of my interests in pursuing my hobbies and other extracurricular activities. Later, when I got married, my wife Minnie was a pillar of strength to me in the pursuit of my dreams. My daughter Maya was also proud of my achievements.
I consider that I am lucky to get a good education, recognition for my extracurricular activities, and opportunities to work in prestigious organizations like the Ministry of Finance, the Government of India, and the World Bank. I also got opportunities to travel to many parts of the world and get international exposure.
Please tell us about your book, Dazzling Destinations.
So far, I have traveled to 70 countries. Having spent most of my adult life exploring different countries, I am bringing out this book, providing insight into some of the most dazzling destinations around the world. This book is invaluable for those looking for first-hand information on foreign travels. Activities like bird-watching, camping, kayaking, hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, swimming, whitewater rafting, and trekking are all recounted across stories from different countries. The readers will find it challenging to pick the best country that they want for their next visit! Not only has each country been specially researched for this book, but all the 55 illustrations (44 watercolor paintings and 11 black-and-white illustrations) are done by myself. These illustrations provide a quick study of the countries bringing out the most notable features of each country and its people.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
The following strategies have been very effective and successful in my life’s journey:
(i) Pursue your dreams and always dream big. My guiding principle has been that by aiming for the stars, we can at least reach a tree top!
(ii) Be persistent: Even if we try and work hard, there is no guarantee that we will be successful in the first or second attempts. So we should be persistent and persevering until we achieve our goals and dreams.
(iii) Keep your eyes and ears open for opportunities. We should always keep our eyes and ears open to see opportunities. We never know when opportunities will strike at our doorsteps. So when they knock at our door, we should grab those opportunities and make use of them.
