Distant At Best: Pacoenfuego’s Folk EP Blends Darkness and Emotion with Ghostly Charm

Distant At Best: Pacoenfuego’s Haunting New Chapter

When an artist manages to stir both comfort and unease in a single breath, you know you’ve stepped into something memorable. Pacoenfuego, the dark indie folk artist with roots in Mexico City, has released his newest EP Distant At Best, a five-track project that clocks in at just over twelve minutes but leaves a lasting impression. Each song carries a weight of memory and longing, framed by acoustic guitar lines and tinged with the eerie sensibilities he developed while scoring horror films.

The EP dropped on September 12, 2025, and it already feels like a defining moment in his evolving career. Short, poignant, and shadowed with emotion, this release invites listeners into the quiet corners of heartbreak and reflection.

Crafting Shadows Through Sound

Pacoenfuego’s story starts with a guitar in hand. Growing up in Mexico City, he discovered early on that music could hold emotions words sometimes failed to express. That realization pushed him further into songwriting and later into production, where he found a second voice in creating atmospheres as gripping as any lyric.

What makes him stand apart is the way he fuses his acoustic foundation with a cinematic edge. Years of composing for horror films gave him a sharp instinct for tension and release. Using Ableton, he carved haunting backdrops that guided chilling stories on screen. That skill now bleeds into his folk work, creating songs that feel like soundtracks for late-night walks or solitary moments under dim lights. It’s music that breathes with intimacy while carrying an otherworldly pull.

Pacoenfuego’s voice remains uniquely his own, rich with a spectral quality that lingers well after the last note fades.

Distant At Best: A Dark Reflection

At the heart of Distant At Best is a meditation on loss, memory, and fragile connection. The five tracks create a journey that feels personal yet universal, as if Pacoenfuego is whispering secrets listeners have felt themselves but never put into words.

The opening track, it’s made, stretches out at 3:23 and sets the tone with sparse guitar chords that carry raw vulnerability. call, one of two explicit tracks, sharpens that intimacy into a more direct confession, while sparks burns quietly with imagery of fleeting connection. citylights captures the glow and distance of urban nights in just 2:16, and the closer, gust., is the shortest yet most cutting, wrapping the record with a surge of emotion in under two minutes.

Each song is brief, yet together they create a complete story. The brevity adds to the intensity, leaving no room for filler. It’s a collection that feels like standing in a dark forest, catching fragments of memories carried on the wind.

For Pacoenfuego, the EP is more than music. It’s a snapshot of time, shaped by both personal ache and resilience. It shows that even in the heaviest shadows, beauty can take form.

Beyond the Music

Pacoenfuego produces for local talents, helping other artists carve out their voices with his signature depth. Collaboration is part of his DNA, and his presence in the community shows his dedication to more than just personal growth.

He’s also ventured into podcasting, opening new doors for conversation and connection. By balancing his solo artistry with collaboration and community work, Pacoenfuego proves that his vision goes beyond stage lights and recording booths. His music may be drenched in shadows, but it’s always reaching outward.

His career also carries a cinematic streak. He’s composed for film, including the soundtrack for A Savior Red, which landed on major platforms like Amazon Prime and Hulu. That background explains the sweeping scope in his folk songs. Even the quietest track feels widescreen, like a scene unfolding with emotional depth.

We had the privilege of interviewing Pacoenfuego. Here are excerpts from the interview.

Hi, it’s great to have you with us today! Please share about yourself with our readers.

Hi, I am pacoenfuego, an indie folk artist with a flavor of horror and spooky in my acoustic music.

Please tell us about your journey.

I started first as a guitarist and now do a lot of production for local artists in Austin, as well as run my own podcast. The soundtrack for horror movies has been great, but I generally love the sombre feeling of acoustic music.

Any message for our readers?

Please know there is a lot more to come, and I plan to infuse the indie folk genre with new blends and genre-bending audio.

Thank you so much for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
