A Life of Fantasy, a World of Secrets

Nerina Winters, the protagonist, lives a life many would envy—at least on the surface. She works as a professional mermaid, putting on daily performances at an aquarium, mesmerizing audiences with her aquatic grace. This fantasy role becomes more symbolic than she realizes, as her life begins to mimic the very myths she portrays. Nerina’s seemingly normal life shatters when she finds herself in a doctor’s office, receiving unsettling news that uncovers a family secret she was not meant to know about until her thirtieth birthday.

The discovery is life-changing, launching her into a world of uncertainty where the people she thought she knew harbor dangerous secrets. Her husband, a seemingly trustworthy partner, turns out to have a hidden side of his own. As Nerina uncovers these layers of deception, the novel delves into themes of trust, betrayal, and the burden of secrets.

The Peril of Secrets

One of the central themes in The Blues of Atlantis is the idea that secrets can be deadly. As the story unfolds, readers are taken on a suspenseful ride where secrets are not just personal—they are a matter of life and death. Patricia Elliott masterfully explores the dual nature of secrecy: some characters are willing to risk everything to protect their secrets, while others are destroyed by them. The tension builds as the novel progresses, leaving readers to wonder who will live long enough to uncover the truth.

Nerina’s journey is both external and internal. Externally, she’s on the run, unsure of whom to trust, especially as her husband’s mysterious past comes to light. Internally, she’s grappling with the realization that her entire life has been based on a false premise. The family secret revealed in the doctor’s office sets the stage for a dramatic unraveling of relationships, forcing Nerina to confront who she really is and what her future holds.

Myth and Reality Intertwined

For as long as there have been people, there have been myths—tales that capture the imagination and offer explanations for the unknown. Elliott taps into this rich tradition by weaving mythological elements into the contemporary setting of The Blues of Atlantis. Nerina’s role as a mermaid performer is not just a job but a metaphor for the deeper, hidden truths in her life. As she navigates her way through these revelations, the boundary between myth and reality begins to blur. The novel cleverly asks: What if the myths we’ve grown up with are more real than we ever imagined?

This theme of myth blending with reality is one of the novel’s most compelling aspects. Elliott expertly uses mermaid mythology as a symbolic framework for exploring Nerina’s self-discovery and the dangers lurking beneath the surface of her life. The novel challenges readers to think about the myths they hold dear and whether those myths could hold deeper truths about their own lives.

Hi Patricia, It’s great to have you with us today! Please share about yourself with our readers.

Hi, I live in Beautiful British Columbia with my children and significant other. Now, that my lovely kids are all adults, I’ve decided to actively pursue my passion for the written word.

Please tell us about your book, The Blues of Atlantis.

My bookThe Blues of Atlantis, follows a young woman who learns that she isn’t who she thought she was, and neither are the people around her. Secrets run rampant, and she has to determine who to trust and who not to trust. They learn that secrets can be dangerous. Some even die because of them.

Please share your journey with our readers.

When I was a youngster, I spent the majority of my time writing fanfiction and poetry to avoid the harsh reality of bullying. Writing allowed me to escape into another world, even if temporarily; a world in which I could be anyone or anything, even a mermaid.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

Successful. That’s to be debated. *lol* I think the biggest thing that helped me was learning how to create a plan to reach my goals. If you create a daily list of goals and don’t stop until those are completed, you can accomplish more than you think.

Any message for our readers?

Never stop reading. It activates the imagination, which is something we really need in the world today. People are forgetting how to use it with all the technology we have out there. And, you matter to an author more than you realize…not just because you buy the book and leave reviews, but we want you to forget all your worries for just a little while and be able to escape into another dimension.
