A Rising Voice in Fiction: Meet Alison C. Hawes
As the literary world continues to evolve, it’s always refreshing to find an emerging voice that combines heartfelt storytelling with a sense of place and purpose. Alison C. Hawes, a writer based in the DMV area, is just such a talent. With a background that reflects both an early passion for imaginative tales and a deep appreciation for her local roots, Alison has been steadily carving her place in contemporary literature. Her work is personal yet expansive, drawing on vivid memories, dreams, and the world around her. For readers who crave an authentic voice and stories that resonate on both an emotional and cultural level, Alison C. Hawes might just become a new favorite.
From Early Imaginings to Personal Reflections

From a very young age, Alison discovered the magic of putting pen to paper. She was the kind of child who was always spinning imaginative yarns—who would, in her downtime, transform everyday moments into playful stories filled with whimsy. As she grew older, what began as the pastime of a curious child evolved into a more purposeful endeavor. The bright-eyed storyteller who once scribbled in journals and notepads eventually became a thoughtful writer who knew how to blend personal experiences and larger-than-life ideas. By the time Alison reached adulthood, she had a clear direction: her stories would reflect the dreams, memories, and personal struggles that shaped her into the woman she is today.
Her Debut Novel: Painted Smiles and Cigarettes
Alison’s first novel, Painted Smiles and Cigarettes, offered readers a taste of her distinctive blend of reality and fiction. Partly based on a true story, this debut work anchored Alison’s voice firmly in the realm of heartfelt narrative and emotional authenticity. Within its pages, readers could sense her willingness to open windows into her own past while still spinning a narrative that felt universal. The novel struck a chord with many who appreciated the raw honesty and the delicate balance between hope and hardship.
In Painted Smiles and Cigarettes, Alison’s prose carried a sort of quiet strength. Her characters were not simple stand-ins or archetypes, but layered individuals who reflected the complexity of real life. Through moments of laughter, heartbreak, and resilience, she invited readers to understand that personal history can be a rich source of inspiration. The success of her debut signaled that Alison was not just another new author, but someone ready to build a lasting literary presence.
A New Chapter Begins: Mister Price’s Calloway
Set to release on January 30th, 2025, Alison’s upcoming novel Mister Price’s Calloway is poised to capture the hearts of readers who enjoy stories that are both romantic and challenging. This young adult tale, set in Virginia, weaves themes of forbidden love and the yearning for independence, all while painting a vivid picture of a place that feels both intimate and grand. The story’s central romance is “forbidden” and “unwanted,” words that promise tension, longing, and a conflict that will keep readers turning pages well past their bedtime.
If Painted Smiles and Cigarettes introduced readers to Alison’s reflective style, Mister Price’s Calloway promises to show another side of her storytelling. Here, she ventures into territory where love contends with social and familial constraints, where personal freedom must be claimed rather than handed over. Expect characters who search desperately for a life they can truly call their own. Expect an emotional landscape that mirrors the lush, historical backdrop of Virginia. And most of all, expect to get lost in a romance that asks questions about what it really means to choose for oneself in a world that imposes so many expectations.
Embracing Authenticity and Growth
What sets Alison C. Hawes apart is her courage to evolve. With each new project, she dares to push deeper, crafting stories that resonate with readers from varied backgrounds. Her experiences—both the youthful dreams she nurtured growing up in the DMV area and the personal reflections that shaped her early works—inform a perspective that feels genuinely human. She doesn’t simply tell a story; she invites readers to share in a journey marked by vulnerability and growth.
For those who appreciate honest, character-driven fiction that doesn’t shy away from complex emotions, Alison’s work is sure to delight. As the literary calendar moves towards January 30th, 2025, the anticipation around Mister Price’s Calloway only grows. Early readers, fans of her debut, and newcomers alike have reason to be excited. With her talent, warmth, and commitment to truthful storytelling, Alison C. Hawes has established herself as a compelling voice and a writer whose next chapter readers can’t wait to discover.
We had the privilege of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview:
Hi, Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.
Hello! My name is Alison, and I am a writer based in the DMV area.
Please tell us about your upcoming novel ‘Mister Price’s Calloway‘.
My upcoming novel, Mister Price’s Calloway, is a forbidden love/unwanted romance tale based in Virginia. I first got the idea in a nightmare, and was immediately captivated by Frances’ pain, wanting to learn more about her and see what I could do to bring her story to life. It quickly became a project I could get lost in, and is for sure one of my favorite projects to date. I feel that it shows my growth as an author and what I might come up with in the future.
Please tell us about your journey.
I first started writing at a very young age, always having a vivid imagination. As I grew, I found a love for literature and began to put a more personal take on my own stories, both writing about my dreams and personal experiences. My first novel, Painted Smiles and Cigarettes, is partly based on a true story about what I witnessed in high school, getting past bullying and numerous other personal obstacles.
I didn’t ever think I would make it this far if I’m being honest. I used to write short stories based on dreams in my room to pass the time, (usually when I was grounded and the internet was turned off) or to escape reality and the harshness of school bullies, if only for a minute.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
I have definitely learned a lot by reading everything I come across. Broadening my horizons and attending classes at my current college and various online writers courses or in-person conferences has taught me a lot about the industry and what’s necessary to be recognized. I hope to do more research and planning to expand my fanbase in the years to come.
