Christopher Nelson offers a sound, exciting narrative about the Patterson family and makes a great case as to why they need more recognition, contrasting their business with a white-owned one and exploring the power behind their work and contributions.

This is the second edition, significantly enhanced from the 2019 one. It now includes 160 pages of additional content and 50 new illustrations and photos.

This is the story of The C. R. Patterson and Sons Company, which operated between 1865 and 1939 in Ohio. It was passed through three generations and worked to fit the quickly shifting demands of transportation. The company was a pioneer in the business with Frederick Patterson, the son of founder C.R., who became the first and only Black manufacturer to have built an automobile. This success was linked to a strong development in other areas, like politics and promoting business for Black people during a time when it was very difficult.

The book charts the trajectory of the Patterson family through 74 years of adversity and triumphs until the Great Depression made their company finally shut its doors.
