A Little Girl’s Big Dream
Oakley’s always admired how effortlessly her mom spreads joy wherever she goes. Every room lights up when her mom enters, filled instantly with warmth and kindness. Naturally, Oakley wants to shine that way, too. But for a shy little girl, finding that glow isn’t easy.
She tries it all—catching lightning bugs in jars, sprinkling glitter everywhere, even wrapping herself up in Christmas lights. Yet, despite her best efforts, nothing makes Oakley feel like she’s truly shining. Each attempt leaves her feeling disappointed and just a little more discouraged.
But Oakley doesn’t realize something special yet: her glow doesn’t depend on glitter or twinkling lights. It’s something deeper—something already waiting inside her heart.
Discovering the True Source of Light

Just when Oakley’s ready to give up on her bright dream, her mom gently shares an important truth. The glow Oakley admires in her mother doesn’t come from external things. Instead, it comes from Jesus living within. This revelation gently shifts Oakley’s perspective, helping her understand that the brightest lights shine from within.
Oakley begins to see herself differently. Confidence slowly replaces her shyness as she recognizes the glow of faith already flickering inside her heart. She learns that shining isn’t about trying to imitate others, but about letting the love of Jesus naturally flow through her actions.
This sweet and heartfelt lesson makes Oakley’s Bright Idea perfect for kids aged four to eight. It helps them gently grasp a significant truth: no matter how young or small, they can radiate God’s love in their own unique ways. Whether at bedtime, during family storytime, or Sunday school, children will relate to Oakley’s journey and be encouraged to shine from within.
Behind the Story: Bailey Rodgers’ Inspiration

Bailey Rodgers is a mom of two, a military spouse, a small business owner, and now—a joyful new role—a children’s book author. Writing quietly lived in her heart for years, patiently waiting for confidence to match her passion.
Years ago, Bailey crafted a simple, playful story about a girl striving to “be the light in a room,” gifting it to a child she once nannied. The story remained tucked away, almost forgotten, until Bailey became a mom herself. While reading countless bedtime stories to her daughter Oakley, Bailey noticed a gap—finding books that talked about Jesus in a simple, playful, and accessible way wasn’t easy.
Fueled by a deepening faith, especially during periods of solo parenting common to military families, Bailey revisited her old story. Oakley’s Bright Idea emerged from this careful, loving refinement. It became a story deeply personal to her family—after all, her daughter Oakley is its star.
Now, with a second daughter, Ivorly, joining their family, Bailey humorously admits feeling a real yet amusing pressure to write another book. She playfully suggests fans should stay tuned—though it might take her another couple of years to fulfill that promise.
Sharing Faith Through Simple Moments

Ultimately, Bailey’s goal with Oakley’s Bright Idea isn’t just to tell a delightful tale. She hopes it becomes a gentle reminder for families that faith can weave naturally through everyday moments—even something as simple as reading a bedtime story.
Bailey understands motherhood can feel chaotic at times, yet believes deeply that God shows up precisely in those ordinary, messy moments. By sharing Oakley’s journey of discovering where true light originates, Bailey encourages parents and kids alike. They’ll discover together that shining brightly doesn’t require glitter or lightning bugs, but a simple willingness to let Jesus’s love fill their hearts and actions.
Through Oakley’s Bright Idea, Bailey Rodgers offers not just a charming story but also a beautiful reminder—every child carries within them a light meant to shine.
We had the privilege of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview:
Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.
Hi! I’m Bailey, a military wife, mom, and now — unexpectedly but joyfully — a children’s book author. I recently self-published a Christian picture book called Oakley’s Bright Idea, written to inspire little ones to understand where and who their shining lights come from.
Please tell us about your journey.
The idea for Oakley’s Bright Idea actually began about eight years ago when I was a nanny. I doodled a little story on paper for the youngest daughter, and her mom really loved it. I thought about turning it into something more back then, but life moved on, and the idea was set aside.
Years later, as I began my own journey into motherhood, that story came back to me — but with deeper meaning. I started thinking more about the kind of role model I wanted to be. Not perfect, but someone who points my children to Jesus through everyday actions. Even when I mess up, I can use those moments to circle back to grace and remind them (and myself) what it looks like to shine a light in the world. That became the heart of the book — encouraging kids to be little lights for Jesus right where they are.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
Prayer and persistence. I asked God to guide each step — from the words on the page to the illustrator I chose. I also leaned into community, shared authentically, and trusted that if the message was meaningful to even one child or parent, it was worth it. I think staying grounded in the “why” behind the book helped me keep going even when the process felt intimidating.
Any message for our readers?
Don’t underestimate the power of your voice — or your child’s. Oakley’s Bright Idea is a reminder that even small acts of kindness and love can shine brightly. And for those dreaming of writing or creating something — you don’t need a big platform or a perfect plan to begin. Just start, and trust that God will use it.
Thank you so much, Bailey, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
