Kurtz was born to author Margaret Kurtz and Colonel Frank Allen Kurtz Jr. from the Air Force, who served in World War II.

Between 1964 and 1970, the actress was involved with Joshua White, best known for the Joshua Light Show.

Professional Life

Kurtz debuted on Broadway in 1976 in Ah, Wilderness. She would go on to appear in several well-received plays, earning five Tony Award Nominations and two wins. She won two awards for Fifth of July in 1981 and The House of Blue Leaves in 1986. She was then nominated for the Tony Awards for Tartuffe in 1988, Frozen in 2004, and Heartbreak House in 2007.

Kurtz’s first television appearance was on The Donna Reed Show in 1962. At eighteen, she was on To Tell the Truth, and had her debut as a series regular in As The World Turns. 1977 saw a breakthrough in her theater work with A History of the American Film, which earned her a Drama Desk Award. Fifth of July, in addition to the Tony, earned her the Drama Desk Award and the Outer Critics Circle, known as the Broadway triple crown.

Between 1991 and 1996, Kurtz appeared in Sisters, the NBC drama, which would be her longest role, earning another two Emmy nominations for this actress. Between 2004 and 2006, she was in Huff. Between 2007 and 2009, she was on Pushing Daisies, where she portrayed Lily Charles, a cranky aunt to central character Chuck. Finally, between 2010 and 2016, she was in Mike & Molly. For her television work in Carol and Company, Kurtz won an Emmy. She received eight Emmy nominations overall.

Later on, Kurtz would go on to appear in series like ER, Lost, Desperate Housewives, That’s Life, Still Standing, and Nurse Jackie. She would appear in Man with a Plan. Since 2021, she would play Mayim Bialik’s mother in Call Me Kat.

Kurtz has had numerous film appearances. She was in Wildcats in 1986, Dangerous Liaisons in 1988, Stanley & Iris in 1990, Citizen Ruth in 1996, Liar Liar in 1997, and Bubble Boy in 2001. In 2009, she was in Jennifer’s Body and The 5th Wave in 2016. Her latest film roles were in 2009 as Connie Clausen in An Englishman in New York and in 2018 as Grace in Overboard.

Trivia

The unusual name Swoosie comes from The Swoose. It was a Boeing B-17D Flying Fortress bomber, the only one that survived. Swoosie was named by her father, an Air Force bomber pilot. Swoose stood for half-swan, half-goose, and was the plane her father piloted in World War II.

The actress has stated that she feels much more alive when she is acting when in any other situation.

She was reportedly chosen for the film Ghost, in part thanks to how her name sounded with the name of Patrick Swayze.
