About Tim Gunn

Timothy MacKenzie Gunn (Tim Gunn) is an American Host, author, and television pesonality. He has served on the faculty of Parsons School of Design from 1982 to 2007 and was chair of fashion design at the school from 2000 to 2007, after which he decided to join Liz Claiborne (Now known as Kate Spade & Company) as its chief creative officer. Gunn has become a very well known figure by appearing in over 16 seasons of the well known reality television program Project Runway, where he was co-host along with Heidi Klum and had been the on-air mentor to the designers.

Tim Gunn’s popularity on the show led to two additional spin-off shows, Lifetimes Under the Gunn and Bravo’s Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style, as well as five books. In addition to being the executive producer on the show, Gunn has also served as a mentor for teen designers on Project Runway: Junior. He’s also provided his voice for the Disney Junior television show Sofia the First, where he plays Baileywick, the castle steward.

Early life before fame

Tim was born in Washington. His father worked in the FBI, where he started after being agent originality; he transitioned into being a ghostwriter and speechwriter for J. Edgar Hoover. Tim Gunn attended the prestigious Corcoran College of Art and Design, where he received his BFA in sculpture.

Gunn has stated he is gay, was raised in a household that was extremely homophobic where homosexuals were viewed as predators. According to a video that Gunn created for the It Gets Better Project, he attempted suicide when he was 17 by swallowing over 50 pills. He had denied his sexual orientation until reaching his early 20s and didn’t share his orientation until he came out to his sister when he was 29.

Career

Tim served as a director of admissions for the Corcoran, working at Parsons in 1982. He also served as an associate dean from 1989 to 2000, after which he became Fashion Design Department chair in August of 2000. Tim Gunn began appearing on Project Runway during its first season in 2004 and is now most famously remembered for his catchphrase “Make it work.”. Gunn received a Primetime Emmy Award in 2013 for Oustanding Host For A Reality Or Reality-Competition Program. Gunn’s reality show, Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style, in which Gunn gives fashion advice, debuted in September of 2007 on the Bravo television network. His show ran for a total of 16 episodes over the course of two seasons. Gunn was also featured in Lifetimes Under the Gunn, which spanned over 13 episodes.

Personal life

Tim Gunn lives in Manhattan. In an interview from 2006, Gunn stated that he hasn’t had a relationship since the 1980s following an abrupt end to his relationship with his at-that-time boyfriend who cheated on him. Tim has stated that he still loves his ex-boyfriend, but the pair are no longer in touch.
