Grant is the daughter of a costume designer and a district judge. She studied ballet and attended the Royal Ballet School. This was followed by places at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the Brasenose College, Oxford University. Weeks after she graduated from Oxford, Grant was cast in Stardust, where she had a small part as a girl, transformed from a man to a goat and to a woman.

She was cast in a leading role in Lark Rise to Candleford, a BBC period drama, where she played Lady Adelaide Midwinter. The first series was successful, and she was cast as Grace Darling, also the lead, in Personal Affairs, a BBC comedy-drama.

She received the role of Rhys Ifans in the feature film Mr Nice, followed by a return to the small screen with an appearance on Poirot starring David Suchet in the title role. She reprised the lore of Lady Adelaide for other series of Lark Rise to Candleford.
