Grant is the daughter of a costume designer and a district judge. She studied ballet and attended the Royal Ballet School. This was followed by places at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the Brasenose College, Oxford University. As a student, she also started performing in plays, which earned her an invitation by the Royal Shakespeare Company and contacts with agents.
Weeks after she graduated from Oxford, Grant was cast in Stardust, where she had a small part as a girl, transformed from a man to a goat and to a woman.
She was cast in a leading role in Lark Rise to Candleford, a BBC period drama, where she played Lady Adelaide Midwinter. The first series was successful, and she was cast as Grace Darling, also the lead, in Personal Affairs, a BBC comedy-drama.
She received the role of Rhys Ifans in the feature film Mr Nice, followed by a return to the small screen with an appearance on Poirot starring David Suchet in the title role. She reprised the lore of Lady Adelaide for other series of Lark Rise to Candleford.
She appeared in Women in Love alongside Rosamund Pike and Rory Kinnear. Grant also continued to do theatre work in productions like The Picture.
In 2012, she had a role opposite Rupert Graves in Garrow’s Law, followed by Endeavour, the crime drama series. Later, she was in the HBO production Strikeback, the film Copenhagen, and the BBC movie Legacy.
In 2015, she was in Indian Summers, also a period drama focusing on the 1930s. After that, she starred in the film Breakdown and went back for series two of Indian Summers.
The actress starred in the pilot of True Fiction for NBC. She also appeared in the film Heidi: Queen of the Mountains with Bill Nighy as Miss Rottenmeier.
In 2019, Grant appeared in The Last Vermeer. She also had a role in Prodigal Son. In 2020, she lent her voice for the video game Watchdogs: Legion.
2021 saw her appear in the Netflix series The Irregulars as Patricia Coleman Jones. Unfortunately, the series was canceled after one season. The same year she had a central role in the supernatural thriller series The Box as Sylvian Rosen.
In addition to her acting, Grant has a blog with InStyle magazine.
Originally, Grant trained to be a ballet dancer and started performing in prestigious events at an early age. Later, she shifted her focus towards opera and wanted to become an opera singer. Finally, she landed on acting and began her career shortly after graduating from Oxford.
Olivia Grant often appeared in period dramas and seems to favor the roles of aristocrats, with many of her characters being ladies, such as Lady Adelaide Midwinter on Lark Rise to Candleford or Lady Henrietta Armistead on Garrow’s Law.
