Nicholas Alexander Chavez: A Rising Star in Television and Theatre
Nicholas Alexander Chavez, born September 6, 1999, in Houston, Texas, United States, is an American actor whose career has quickly gained momentum across soap operas, streaming dramas, and stage productions. A Virgo by zodiac sign, Chavez is best known for his award-winning role as Spencer Cassadine on General Hospital and his work in Ryan Murphy’s hit series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story and Grotesquerie.
Early Life and Education
Chavez grew up between Sugar Land, Texas, and Denver, Colorado, following his parents’ separation when he was five. He split his time between his mother’s home in Denver and his father’s in Arvada, Colorado. An active and adventurous child, he enjoyed snowboarding, hiking, and mountain biking, and described himself as a “precocious kid.” His early interest in performing was sparked by experiences like recreating the blessing of the Eucharist after attending Sunday Mass.
He joined the Colorado Children’s Chorale, performing at notable venues like the Ellie Caulkins Opera House and the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. In 2014, he attended Camp Rising Sun, further broadening his experiences.
While attending East High School, Chavez played football until a turning point in his junior year when his drama teacher, Matt Murphy, cast him as Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird. That experience inspired him to quit football and commit to acting. As a senior, he trained under Jennifer McCray Rincón at Visionbox Studio Theater, assisting around the theatre in exchange for coaching to prepare for competitive college auditions.
Chavez was accepted into several prestigious drama programs, including Rutgers University, Carnegie Mellon, and NYU, but not Juilliard. He chose the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers, later taking a leave of absence to move to Los Angeles and pursue acting. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, he returned to Vero Beach, Florida, working odd jobs while continuing to send self-taped auditions.
Breakthrough in Television
Chavez made his television debut on July 1, 2021, stepping into the role of Spencer Cassadine on ABC’s General Hospital under a three-year contract. His portrayal quickly resonated with viewers, earning him the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Younger Performer in a Drama Series. His time on the show was marked by both personal and professional milestones, including the loss of his longtime manager, Jenevieve Brewer, only a few months into his run. He exited the role in January 2024.
During his General Hospital tenure, Chavez also starred in the Tubi original film Crushed (2022), playing Jason. In 2023, his career expanded into streaming drama when he was cast as Lyle Menendez in the second season of Ryan Murphy’s Netflix anthology series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, released in 2024. That same year, he took on the role of priest Charlie Mayhew in Murphy’s FX horror drama Grotesquerie.
As both series premiered just ten days apart, Chavez signed with Creative Artists Agency for representation, cementing his rising status in the industry. In late 2024, he was cast in the fourth I Know What You Did Last Summer film, though his scene was ultimately cut from the final release.
Expanding Career and Theatre Work
In March 2025, Chavez was announced as part of the cast of The Technique, a psychological thriller featuring an ensemble that includes Ben Platt, Emma Roberts, Laura Harrier, Kelsey Asbille, and Noomi Rapace. Just a month later, in April 2025, he was cast as Kilroy in the Williamstown Theatre Festival revival of Tennessee Williams’ Camino Real, scheduled for summer 2025.
Chavez’s trajectory shows a clear evolution — from soap opera newcomer to streaming drama talent and now to live theatre, he has consistently taken on challenging and varied roles. Whether portraying complex real-life figures like Lyle Menendez or stepping into the surreal world of Tennessee Williams, he continues to show range, dedication, and an eagerness to push himself artistically.
