His early life and career beginnings

Lin-Manuel attended Hunter College Elementary and Hunter College High School. He graduated from Wesleyan University in 2002, where he studied theatre. Lin-Manuel’s mother was a clinical psychologist Dr. Luz Towns-Miranda. His father was a democratic party consultant, Luis Miranda Jr. He has an elder sister, Luz. Lin-Manuel grew up in the Hispanic neighborhood of Inwood, Northern Manhattan. During this time, he spent at least a month each year with his grandparents in Puerto Rico. He started writing musicals at school. When he was in his sophomore year of college, Lin-Manuel wrote the draft that became his first musical in 1999 (In the Heights).

He wrote, directed, and acted in many other productions while in Wesleyan.
Lin- Manuel witnessed his first Broadway at seven, and it became a stepping stone to his future career. He started his acting career in films and television after graduating from college, taught English in his former high school, and was a columnist for the Manhattan Times. From 2002, Lin-Manuel took part in revising and performing In the Heights. It premiered in Connecticut in 2005 and opened at the 37 Arts Theatre, Off-Broadway in March 2008, and was nominated for several awards, after which he left on February 15, 2009. Lin-Manuel resumed the role and toured in Los Angeles, San Juan, Puerto Rico. He also played as Usnavi from December 25, 2010, until the production closed on January 9, 2011.

Lin-Manuel co-founded a hip hop group, Freestyle Love Supreme in 2003. They toured in various festivals and 2014, created a limited television series for Pivot in 2014 as well as made its Broadway debut on October 2, 2019. Lin-Manuel wrote, acted, produced, and directed many theatrical works. In various films, and also collaborated with Disney by writing and performing songs in the box office hit Moana.

In his work in 2015, Hamilton, from writing the script, music, and lyrics, reached number one on the Billboard 200 and received widespread recognition and awards.
Lin- Manuel’s awards include the Tony Award for Best Musical, the Tony Award for Best Original Score. Others are Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album, the Emmy Award for the song Bigger, amongst many others.

Lin-Manuel is an activist who, during Barack Obama’s presidential tenure, joined forces with US senators and Democratic lawmakers to call for the backing of a Senate bill to ease Puerto Rico’s $70 billion government debt burden.
He also assisted in various rescue efforts, helped a nonprofit adoption agency and disaster relief by contributing proceeds from some of his songs.
He has done fundraising for different reasons to help ease the suffering of people in need and donated thousands of dollars to several organizations.
He received an honorary degree in 2009 from Yeshiva University in Washington Heights, Manhattan, and a Doctor of Humane Letters in 2015 from Wesleyan University.
