James Eugene Carrey was married to Melissa Womer between 1987 and 1995. In 1996 he married Lauren Holly, but they divorced the following year. He was with Jenny McCarthy between 2005 and 2010. He has one child.
Jim Carrey began his career as a stand-up comedian, first in Canada and then in the U.S. Carrey first became recognized In 1990 when he joined the cast for In Living Color, a comedy show focusing on sketches. Then, in 1994, he had his breakthrough roles in film, starring in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber, all of which came out that same year. The films were huge hits, and Carrey became a household name. He continued his career with more commercial successes that relied on his charisma and distinct performance in Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls and Batman Forever in 1995 and Liar Liar in 1997.
In 2000, he played the Grinch in How the Grinch Stole Christmas and took another role in Me, Myself, & Irene. It was followed by Bruce Almighty in 2003, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events in 2004, Fun with Dick and Jane in 2005, 2008’s Yes Man and Horton Hears a Who!, and 2009’s A Christmas Carol.
In the 2010s, Carrey was in Mr. Popper’s Penguins in 2011, Kick-Ass 2 in 2013, Dumb and Dumber To in 2014. 2020 saw Carrey take the role of Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog. He also played Joe Biden on Saturday Night Live. In addition to his comic roles, Carrey has worked dramatically. Some of the most recognized and successful roles he had were in The Truman Show in 1998, Man on the Moon in 1999, and 2004’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which earned him awards for best actor.
Carrey remains best-known as a comedic actor with exaggerated gestures and expressions and a high-energy performance. He has received a lot of fan support and critical acclaim for his performances in dramatic films.
Despite his widely recognized talent, Carrey has never received an Oscar nomination. He was nominated for a BAFTA for his role in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Carrey won two Golden Globes for his performances in Man on the Moon and The Truman Show. However, his roles in The Mask, Dumb and Dumber, and Ace Ventura also received nominations for the Golden Raspberry awards.
Carrey has published two books, the children’s story How Roland Rolls and a novel called Memoirs and Misinformation.
Jim Carrey became the first actor ever to be paid $20 million for a movie. In his case, it was The Cable Guy, a black comedy that was not successful critically but still was a commercial hit, which was the case for many of Carrey’s movies, such as Ace Ventura.
