Personal Life

Boseman got engaged to singer Taylor Simone Ledward who he had been dating since 2015. They got married in secret, which was revealed after his death.

In 2016, Boseman received a colon cancer diagnosis, which was kept private until he died in 2020. Complications from the cancer were responsible for his passing.

Professional Life

Boseman studied directing at Howard University and began his career on the stage. He served as a writer, director, and actor in theater, which earned him a Drama League Directing Fellowship, an acting AUDELCO, and recognition for his work as a playwright, particularly for his play Deep Azure. He has published four plays, but Deep Azure is the one that received the most recognition.

His transition to the screen happened in 2010 when he was made a regular on Persons Unknown. His breakthrough came after the 2013 film 42, where he played Jackie Robinson. He then starred as James Brown in Get on Up in 2014 and as Thurgood Marshall in Marshall in 2017, continuing to portray historical figures.

2016 introduced Boseman as Black Panther and a big part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor appeared in four films playing the character, with one of these being the 2018 Black Panther, which earned a lot of nomination and recognition. Thus, Boseman was the first Black actor to headline a Marvel film. His role as T’Challa, the superhero Black Panther, was a critical and commercial success.

Boseman’s final film was Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, which earned him an Academy Award Nomination and a Golden Globe Award, both as Best Actor. The film was released posthumously.

In addition to his work on movies, he also did TV acting, appearing in shows like All My Children, Third Watch, Law and Order, CSI: NY, ER, Cold Case, Lie to Me, Castle, The Glades, Justified, and Fringe. His final TV project was voice acting as Black Panther for the What if..? Marvel series.

Boseman was an active supporter of various charities and causes, including cancer, the fight against COVID-19, and various children’s organizations. In his later years, he supported many cancer charities, even though he did not openly reveal his diagnosis.
