Ever thought about ditching the hustle and bustle of city life to find connection online? That’s exactly what Penny does in Lita Doolan’s novella, Penny Does Periscope: Digital Adventure. This bite-sized read takes us on a whirlwind journey through the highs and lows of internet fame, friendship, and the quest for a better life.
Penny’s Digital Escape
Penny is fed up with her mundane city routine and decides it’s time for a change. She turns to the digital world, hoping to make new friends and maybe even reinvent herself. Armed with a disconnected SIM card and a knack for hot-desking around the office, she dives headfirst into the latest social media craze—Periscope.
As she begins streaming her life, Penny finds herself connecting with people she never would have met otherwise. She’s not just looking for friends; she’s aiming for a promotion, a better career, and maybe a chance to show off some new fashions. The online world seems like the perfect place to gain visibility and break out of her shell.
The Price of Online Openness
But as Penny soon discovers, internet fame isn’t all hearts and thumbs-up emojis. Rival influencers start to notice her rising popularity, and suddenly she’s under a spotlight she didn’t anticipate. Old video reels resurface—ones she thought were long gone—and she quickly loses control over how she’s perceived online.
The pressure mounts as she tries to juggle her job, find the cash for an unexpected ransom, and maintain her new digital persona. Penny’s journey highlights the cost of being open online, especially when past mistakes come back to haunt you. It’s a relatable cautionary tale for anyone who’s ever shared a bit too much on social media.
A Journey of Self-Discovery
Throughout the story, Penny is not just battling external challenges but also grappling with her own desires and insecurities. She wants to beat loneliness and improve her chances of climbing the corporate ladder. In her quest to be seen and appreciated, life throws curveballs that force her to make tough choices.
Despite the setbacks, Penny remains resilient. She strives to make the best of difficult circumstances, always holding onto the hope that things will turn around. Her journey is a testament to the lengths we’ll go to find connection and the importance of staying true to oneself amid external pressures.

In my journey to develop my own writing style, I find workshops where other creatives encourage each other useful. Reading poetry also feeds my style of writing. Doodling a sketch on scrap paper before I write is a useful way to begin for me.
