James Mbela’s ‘Healing with Psychedelics & Shamanic Plant Medicines’ Is an Essential Guide for Conscious Exploration

Psychedelic experiences can open unfamiliar areas of thought, emotion, memory, and spiritual awareness. Entering these spaces requires careful preparation, informed guidance, and a clear understanding of the responsibilities involved.

In Healing with Psychedelics & Shamanic Plant Medicines: A Practical Guide, Author James Mbela offers sincere journeyers a detailed resource for navigating these experiences with greater awareness. Available in Kindle and paperback editions on Amazon, the book brings traditional wisdom, practical harm reduction, and modern knowledge into one comprehensive guide.

A Working Map of Psychedelic and Plant Medicine Experiences

The growing interest in psychedelics has introduced many people to substances and ceremonial traditions they may understand only partially. James addresses this knowledge gap by presenting a working map of the mind and soul, designed for people encountering these medicines in clinics, retreats, ceremonies, underground settings, or carefully considered self-led environments.

His book explores the responsible and intentional use of psychedelic and shamanic medicines while acknowledging the complexity of the inner territories they can reveal. Powerful experiences may bring insight, fear, emotional intensity, spiritual questions, or deeply rooted personal material to the surface. Preparation gives journeyers a stronger foundation for responding to these moments.

Readers will find detailed profiles of commonly encountered substances, including cannabis, MDMA, ketamine, LSD, psilocybin, DMT, ayahuasca, 5-MeO-DMT, iboga, mescaline, salvia, and kambo. The profiles discuss dosage ranges, pharmacology, timelines, traditional knowledge, scientific research, legal considerations, potential applications, and contraindications. This structure helps readers approach each medicine with a more informed perspective.

Preparation, Navigation, and Meaningful Integration

One of the guide’s central messages is that a psychedelic journey begins long before a substance is taken. Physical health, mental well-being, personal intentions, daily habits, and the surrounding environment can all influence an experience. James provides screening and preparation protocols for clinical sessions, retreats, ceremonial circles, and solitary settings.

The book explains how to assess practitioners and retreat environments, identify medical or psychiatric concerns, and recognize circumstances that may require a journey to be delayed. It also examines practitioner credibility, appropriate support, and the importance of understanding one’s personal readiness.

Once a journey begins, familiar methods of thinking may temporarily change. James explores patterns that can arise during altered states, along with personal protection principles and practices for remaining centered when an experience intensifies. He also discusses ego traps, spiritual bypassing, and hidden emotional currents that can interfere with healing.

Integration receives particular attention throughout the guide. Insights gained during a ceremony or session can fade when they are separated from everyday choices. The weeks and months that follow become essential spaces for reflection and application. Structured integration practices help readers translate realizations into healthier relationships, clearer boundaries, improved habits, and lasting personal growth.

The book also covers microdosing, minidosing, and self-led journey protocols. Clear criteria help readers consider when independent work may be appropriate and when trained support is necessary. These sections reinforce the guide’s broader emphasis on discernment, patience, and personal responsibility.

Daily Practices That Help the Lessons Endure

Psychedelic and plant medicines form only one part of the healing framework presented in the book. James also examines chi gong, meditation, breathwork, physical conditioning, and lifestyle interventions that can support emotional regulation and continued self-awareness.

These practices encourage journeyers to build a stable relationship with themselves outside ceremonial spaces. A meaningful insight can become more useful when it’s supported by consistent action. Daily disciplines create opportunities to revisit lessons, observe old patterns, and make gradual changes without relying entirely on another intense experience.

The guide is written for people preparing for a first ceremony, experienced practitioners exploring ayahuasca or iboga, integration therapists assisting clients, and professionals contributing to the development of the psychedelic field. Physicians, advocates, facilitators, and community members may also find valuable context within its pages.

We had the privilege of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview:

Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.

I’m Mbela, founder of Summit Garden Wellness, a temple, sanctuary, spa and holistic healing center in the rainforest of Costa Rica. I’m an initiated Bwiti practitioner and firekeeper, entrusted by an indigenous lineage to hold medicine and guide people through it. I facilitate ceremonial works, coach people through their integration, and tend the center as a living temple and eco-farm. I’m also the author of Healing with Psychedelics and Shamanic Plant Medicines.

Please tell us about your story/journey.

I didn’t come to this from a spiritual background. My path started in computer science and music, the analytical world of the linear mind. Psychedelics found me when I needed to be taken apart and put back together, and it did exactly that. What began as my own healing became a calling. I spent years in apprenticeship, sitting with elders, keeping the fire, earning the trust of the tradition. Over fifteen years and nearly a thousand people later, that calling became Summit Garden.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

Reverence over ambition. I let this grow at the pace of trust, not like a startup. Staying a student, studying Taoist arts, meditation, and nutrition alongside the medicine. Safety and integrity as non-negotiables, with medical screening and no shortcuts. And reciprocity, making sure the indigenous communities this medicine comes from are acknowledged and supported, not extracted from. Success that forgets its source isn’t success.

Any message for our readers?

The most important relationship you’ll ever have is the one with yourself, and it’s the one most of us neglect. Slow down, get honest, and be willing to look at the unflattering explanation. That’s where real growth lives. If you ever feel called to this medicine, walk toward it with reverence, not curiosity alone.

Thank you so much, Mbela, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
