Lena Rexhepi’s ‘But Where Are You Really From?’ Is a Powerful Memoir of Identity, Courage, and Home

A simple question can carry years of history beneath its surface. In But Where Are You Really From? – Foreign there, Foreign here: From Kosovo to Denmark, Lena Rexhepi transforms that familiar question into a moving exploration of identity, displacement, ambition, and belonging.

A Childhood Changed by War

Lena’s story begins in Ferizaj, Kosovo, where her early life was disrupted by the Kosovo War. At nine years old, she fled with her family in 1999 and entered a world shaped by uncertainty, refugee camps, and separation from everything familiar. These childhood experiences provide the emotional foundation of the memoir, showing how conflict continues to affect people long after the fighting has ended.

Arriving in Denmark as a child refugee brought safety and the possibility of rebuilding. It also introduced a different set of challenges. Lena had to learn a new language, understand unfamiliar social expectations, and find her place within a country that became part of her identity. Her name, appearance, and heritage often encouraged others to question whether she truly belonged.

The title captures one of the memoir’s central experiences. “But where are you really from?” may sound like casual curiosity, yet it can remind someone that others still see them as an outsider. Lena examines the meaning hidden within that question and the emotional weight it gathers when heard repeatedly.

Her account gives readers a personal view of migration. War, memory, language, and adaptation become lived experiences rather than distant subjects. The result feels intimate and accessible, inviting readers to understand the human story behind labels such as refugee and immigrant.

Building a Life Between Cultures

Education, ambition, and independence play important roles in Lena’s journey. She earns a master’s degree from Copenhagen Business School and develops an international career across finance and the pharmaceutical industry. Her professional path takes her through Europe and the United States, including experiences in London and New York.

Each achievement represents determination, discipline, and a desire to create possibilities beyond the circumstances she inherited. Still, success does not erase the questions surrounding identity. Lena encounters prejudice, racism, discrimination, and subtle workplace barriers. She also faces expectations connected to being a woman from an immigrant background.

These moments reveal how belonging can remain uncertain even after someone has learned the language, completed an education, established a career, and contributed to society. Home becomes more than a location. It’s connected to acceptance, memory, relationships, opportunity, and the freedom to exist without constantly explaining one’s presence.

The memoir also considers the unusual experience of feeling foreign in two places. Kosovo remains part of Lena through family, memory, history, and language. Denmark shapes her daily life, growth, education, and worldview. This dual connection creates a rich identity, though it can also leave a person feeling suspended between worlds.

A Personal Story With Wider Meaning

Written with openness and vulnerability, But Where Are You Really From? explores survival without reducing it to a single triumphant moment. Resilience appears through everyday choices: learning, working, adapting, travelling, speaking honestly, and continuing to pursue a dignified life.

Lena’s reflections extend across migration, womanhood, love, success, failure, and ambition. She considers how history can remain present in the body and how an old language can linger on the tongue while a new one becomes part of daily life. Her observations give the memoir emotional depth and make its themes relevant to readers from many backgrounds.

The book encourages thoughtful conversations about racism, cultural identity, workplace experiences, and society’s definition of who counts as local. It also speaks to anyone who has struggled to reconcile different versions of home or felt pressure to prove where they belong.

Available on Amazon in Kindle and paperback formats, the memoir can be read in English, Danish, and Albanian. Lena wrote and translated all three editions herself, giving the story a direct connection to the languages that have shaped her life.
