Sipporah International’s ‘Interrogating Ashkenormativity’ Bravely Examines History While Inspiring a More Inclusive Jewish Future

Books that encourage thoughtful discussion often leave a lasting impression on readers who seek a deeper understanding of society and culture. Interrogating Ashkenormativity: Systemic Disparities, Repressive Interventions and Other Detriments Against Black and Brown Jews is one such work, offering an insightful examination of identity, representation, and historical narratives within Jewish communities.

Written by Sipporah International, the book combines scholarly research with lived experience, inviting readers to reflect on long-standing structures while encouraging meaningful conversations about inclusion, dignity, and communal growth.

A Thoughtful Examination of Jewish Identity and Historical Narratives

Interrogating Ashkenormativity presents a detailed exploration of how Ashkenazi traditions and perspectives have often become the dominant framework within many Jewish institutions and cultural spaces. Through historical analysis, ethnographic observations, and personal testimony, the book investigates how this framework has influenced perceptions of authenticity, leadership, education, and belonging.

The work traces the historical development of Ashkenormativity from medieval Europe through the evolution of the modern Jewish diaspora. Along the way, it illustrates how institutional practices, cultural memory, and established narratives have continued to shape experiences for Black and Brown Jewish communities. Rather than focusing solely on historical events, the book examines how these influences remain visible in present-day communal life.

Sipporah approaches these subjects with careful research while maintaining language that remains accessible to readers beyond academic circles. This balance allows individuals from various backgrounds to engage with complex ideas without requiring specialized knowledge of Jewish history or sociology.

Research, Personal Perspective, and a Vision for Change

One of the defining qualities of the book is its integration of historical scholarship with firsthand experience. Academic sources provide context for broader social developments, while personal narratives add emotional depth and human perspective to the discussion. Together, these elements create a well-rounded exploration that encourages readers to consider both systemic structures and individual experiences.

Throughout the book, Sipporah examines areas such as conversion processes, educational environments, leadership opportunities, and broader cultural assumptions surrounding Jewish identity. These discussions encourage readers to reflect on how institutional norms are formed and how they may influence participation within diverse communities.

The book also presents a framework for positive communal transformation. Themes of justice, accountability, and recognition of Jewish diversity remain central throughout the discussion. Rather than offering simple conclusions, the work invites ongoing dialogue and thoughtful reflection about creating environments where every member of the Jewish community feels respected and represented.

Because the writing combines historical context with contemporary relevance, the book speaks to a wide audience. Scholars may appreciate its research foundation, while educators, clergy, activists, students, and general readers can find value in its accessible presentation and practical relevance.

Why This Book Matters in Today’s Conversations

Questions surrounding identity, representation, and inclusion continue to shape conversations across many societies. Interrogating Ashkenormativity contributes to these discussions by focusing on experiences that have often received less attention within mainstream narratives about Jewish life.

The book encourages readers to examine assumptions that may have become deeply embedded within institutions and cultural traditions over time. By exploring the experiences of Black and Brown Jews, it broadens conversations about diversity within Jewish communities while highlighting voices that deserve greater recognition.

Its thoughtful structure makes it suitable for individual reading, classroom discussions, community study groups, and professional development settings. Readers interested in history, religious studies, sociology, diversity, and cultural identity will likely find meaningful insights throughout its pages.

The combination of historical evidence, ethnographic research, and personal reflection gives the work both intellectual substance and emotional resonance. Each chapter builds upon the previous one, creating a cohesive narrative that encourages careful consideration rather than quick judgment.

We had the privilege of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview:

Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.

Hey, I’m Sipporah from Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Alongside a bunch of other creative things, I’m a musical theatre performer and the indie author of Interrogating Ashkenormativity and the Tikkun Tapestry Weavers series.

Please tell us about your journey.

So basically, I’ve been moving along two big journeys: my Jewish journey and my journey as an author. My Jewish journey kicked off about 25 years ago, when I decided to embrace religious Judaism — and honestly, a whole lot of other Jewish facets — as part of who I am. I dove in completely.

My author journey started a little over 10 years ago, inspired by the Sephardic community in Amsterdam. Stories about faith, strength, and just being human started pouring through me. Since then, I’ve kept building forward, creating my fiction series Tikkun Tapestry Weavers, which is meant for readers from all walks of life — religious or not, Jewish or otherwise.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

When it comes to the Jewish side of things, I’ve always been super studious — wanting to understand everything from different layers, angles, and depths.

On the author side, I’ve learned a lot from other writers and some great author platforms, but at the end of the day the real core is the stories that flow out of me. I love playing with language — sometimes it comes out poetic, other times totally down-to-earth.

Any message for our readers?

When it comes to Interrogating Ashkenormativity, get ready to be surprised — because this book digs into a system most people never even notice. It’s a structure that’s been in place since around the 11th century, one that consistently advantages white Ashkenazi Jews across different corridors of power, institutions, and everyday communal life — and yes, even in politics.

My book is scholarly, packed with evidence, and backed by academic, historical, and biblical sources. I lay out what’s been hidden from many, and honestly, the information in here is a gamechanger. Whether you’re a pro-Palestine activist, clergy, religious, secular, Jewish, or not Jewish at all — this book speaks to you.

Thank you for considering Interrogating Ashkenormativity.

Thank you so much, Sipporah, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
