In the enchanting world of children’s literature, a new chapter unfolds with “Lucy & the Lake Monster: Volume One, First Edition,” a tale that dives deep into the heart of adventure, belief, and the power of storytelling. Co-authored by Richard Anthony Rossi Jr., an Academy-Award-considered filmmaker, and Kelly Ann Tabor, a retired school teacher with a passion for igniting young minds, this book is not just a story—it’s a journey into the realm of imagination and beyond.
The Adventure Begins
“Lucy & the Lake Monster” introduces us to Lucy Lago, a nine-year-old orphan with an unshakeable belief in Champ, the mythical sea serpent rumored to inhabit Lake Champlain. Residing in a cozy cabin in Crown Point with her beloved grandpa, affectionately known as “Papa,” Lucy’s life is anything but ordinary. Together, they embark on a daring quest to prove Champ’s existence to the world, armed with nothing but their faith and a rickety rowboat.
The narrative weaves a rich tapestry of courage against all odds, as Lucy and Papa face mockery and mercenary forces determined to discredit their mission. Yet, their unwavering determination and childlike faith serve as a beacon of hope, inspiring readers to believe in the impossible.
A Story with Layers
What sets “Lucy & the Lake Monster” apart is its profound allegorical depth. Richard Rossi’s insight reveals Champ as more than just a creature of folklore; it symbolizes the spiritual quest of humanity, where purity of heart and innocence lead to enlightenment and understanding. This narrative choice not only enriches the tale but also invites readers to reflect on their own beliefs and the nature of truth.
Kelly Tabor’s inspiration stems from her own experiences growing up in Crown Point, where the legend of Champ was a staple of local lore. Her transition from sharing these stories in the classroom to bringing them to life on the page (and soon, the screen) highlights the power of storytelling to transcend boundaries and touch hearts across generations.
Beyond the Lake’s Mysteries
“Lucy & the Lake Monster” transcends the typical adventure story by embedding valuable life lessons within its pages. The book offers a guide for young readers to navigate the complexities of growing up, addressing themes such as overcoming mental health challenges, dealing with bullying, and coping with anxiety. Kelly Tabor and Richard Rossi’s collaborative effort to think like their young audience ensures that the story resonates on a personal level, providing comfort and inspiration to those who need it most.
As the tale of Lucy and Papa prepares to make its leap from the written word to the silver screen, the anticipation builds for a story that has captivated the hearts of many. Their adventure represents a testament to faith, the importance of seeking support, and the undying spirit of curiosity.
“Lucy & the Lake Monster” is more than just a children’s book; it’s a beacon of hope and a testament to the enduring power of belief. As readers follow Lucy and Papa on their quest, they are reminded of the importance of holding onto faith, the value of support systems, and the transformative power of storytelling. Kelly Tabor and Richard Rossi have crafted a world where imagination knows no bounds, and the search for Champ becomes a metaphor for life’s greatest adventure: the pursuit of our dreams against all odds. We had the pleasure of interviewing the authors. Here are excerpts from the interview.
Hi, It’s great to have both of you with us today! Please share about yourself with our readers.
Kelly: Hi, my name is Kelly Tabor, co-writer of “Lucy & the Lake Monster,” and I’m a retired 4th grade teacher. I taught for 32 years in public schools in North and South Carolina.
Richard: I’m Richard Rossi, and I’m a co-writer with Kelly of the children’s novel, “Lucy & the Lake Monster.” I’m a filmmaker, actor, and musician in Los Angeles.
Please tell us more about your book, Lucy & the Lake Monster.
Kelly: Our book is the story of an orphan girl named Lucy and her grandfather, “Papa.” They embark on an adventure to find Champ, the sea serpent who lives in Lake Champlain near their cabin in Crown Point, New York.
Richard: Our story works on an allegory level, too. The search for Champ represents the spiritual search of humanity.
Please share your journey with our readers.
Kelly: It’s been a journey telling the stories about Champ the Plesiosaur to my students, and now, to see it go to the next level has blown my mind. First, it became the book and, later this year, coming out as a film. At the public schools where I taught, my nickname was the “Storyteller.” I just never envisioned the stories I told about Champ would go from my classroom to the silver screen.
Richard: I’ve made a journey from minister to moviemaker. I worked in the church in my young adult years. Then, I went from scripture to script and got into acting and filmmaking. Now, I see art as a ministry. Jesus himself told parables that touched people with their symbolic message.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
Richard: My strategy has been to go with the passion, to do the things that I enjoy doing and give me life. I found if you do what you love, everything else follows.
Kelly: Being around my students for three decades, I just tried to think like they think when writing the story with Richard. A second strategy is that we put lessons into the story to help inspire them and help them overcome the challenges they face, like being bullied or feeling anxious.
Any message for our readers?
Richard: In our story, Lucy & Papa live by faith even though the rest of the town mocks them. My message to readers is to please you, not worry about pleasing everybody else’s opinions.
Kelly: We have a message that there are supporters you can reach out to. Lucy has her Papa and her teacher. Reach out and get help if you need it from a counselor, a friend, a pastor, a teacher, a parent, or a family member.
Thank you so much, Richard and Kelly, for giving us your precious time! We wish both of you all the best for your journey ahead!
