Kenneth Kelly’s new novel, Journey of a Forsaken Rose, is an imaginative dive into a haunting world filled with monsters, magic, and mysterious allies. At its heart is Graf—a former soldier turned dog trainer—thrust abruptly into exile. But his banishment isn’t ordinary. Graf’s forced into the Wanwood, a sinister forest in another world entirely. Dark, dangerous, and seemingly endless, this eerie landscape sets the stage for a gripping tale of survival, camaraderie, and hidden threats.
Graf quickly realizes he isn’t alone. He crosses paths with peculiar companions—a lovestruck shapeshifter and the enigmatic Traveler, whose supernatural guidance hints at mysteries yet to unfold. Together, this unlikely trio ventures deep into the shadows, their sights fixed on the elusive Sanctuary, a haven rumored to shelter lost souls and weary wanderers. But is Sanctuary the refuge it promises, or does it conceal darker secrets that could endanger Graf’s fragile new life?
Themes of Redemption and Belonging
Beneath the thrilling battles and strange creatures, Journey of a Forsaken Rose deeply explores themes that resonate profoundly with readers. Graf’s exile and subsequent journey embody personal redemption. He’s not just navigating physical obstacles—he’s confronting his past, questioning his worth, and seeking a sense of belonging in an alien world.
Kenneth Kelly weaves Graf’s emotional odyssey seamlessly into the fantasy setting. Graf’s interactions with his companions—particularly the lovestruck shapeshifter—highlight the transformative power of friendship and love. These relationships ground the narrative, reminding readers that amidst chaos and danger, bonds of loyalty and affection can flourish. Graf’s growth from an isolated exile into a compassionate protector reinforces the message: redemption is always within reach, even in the darkest circumstances.
Inspiration Born from Fairy Tales and Real Life
Kenneth Kelly, the talented mind behind Graf’s compelling adventure, has a knack for storytelling rooted deeply in his own experiences and passions. A 34-year-old novelist and ELA teacher from Tampa, Florida, Kelly is no stranger to immersive storytelling—whether through literature or role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons. His love for martial arts, combined with a lifelong passion for fantasy, breathes authenticity into Graf’s struggle and strength.
Interestingly, the seeds for Journey of a Forsaken Rose sprouted back in 2018. Kelly was teaching at a juvenile detention center, deeply engaged with his students reading Grimm’s Fairy Tales. One day, staring into the dense woods beyond his classroom window, inspiration struck. Ideas flooded his notebook, quickly evolving into the complex, intriguing world of Wanwood. Despite life’s interruptions, Kelly’s dedication persevered, and after more than three years of thoughtful crafting, Graf’s journey finally found its way onto the pages, ready to captivate readers.
Experienced Storytelling with a Fresh Voice
Kenneth Kelly isn’t new to the world of fantasy writing. He’s co-authored works alongside celebrated NY Times bestselling fantasy author Piers Anthony, sharpening his narrative skills and mastering the craft. With Journey of a Forsaken Rose, Kelly confidently steps forward on his own, showcasing a unique voice brimming with creative vision and emotional depth.
His vivid world-building draws readers effortlessly into Wanwood, while his character-driven approach makes Graf and his allies memorable, relatable, and profoundly human—even when they’re supernatural beings. Kelly’s style is refreshingly direct, painting vibrant scenes and heartfelt interactions without bogging down in overly complex prose. He strikes a perfect balance, keeping readers eagerly turning pages to discover what awaits around each twisted bend of the forest.
In Journey of a Forsaken Rose, Kenneth Kelly invites readers on a thrilling, emotionally satisfying quest that blends action-packed fantasy with meaningful introspection. Graf’s struggles and triumphs echo deeply, reminding readers that courage, love, and redemption can flourish, even in the most forsaken places.
We had the privilege of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview:
Hi, Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.
Hello, my name is Kenneth Kelly. I am a 34 year old fantasy novelist and ELA teacher in Tampa, FL. I’ve been writing in one form or another my entire life. Besides writing, I’m also an avid martial artist and DnD enthusiast.
Please tell us about your Book
My book is a dark fantasy novel about an exiled soldier who stumbles into another world and finds himself in an epic conflict that will determine the fate of his new home. The book touches on themes of personal redemption, finding one’s place in the world, and the power of love and friendship.
Please share your journey with our readers.
I began writing this book in 2018. I was teaching at a DJJ youth detention facility for teen boys, and in my ELA class, we were reading Grimms Fairy Tales. I was waiting for the next dorm/class to arrive, and as I was looking out the window of my portable into the woods outside, I got the first ideas for the story. I quickly jotted down those ideas in my notebook and went from there. It took me about three and a half years to complete the first draft…life tends to get in the way sometimes…but I saw it through, and here we are now.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
I attended St. Leo University for a degree in English Professional Writing, focusing heavily on creative writing. I had great mentors who taught me a lot about the writing process, publication, submitting to agents and publishers, etc. The thing that helped me the most was dedicating time every day, no matter how little or seemingly insignificant, to working on my manuscript. I also have a rule about not rewriting or editing anything in my manuscript until the first draft is completed, no matter how terrible or mistake-filled it may be. Otherwise, I’ll be in an endless cycle of rewriting.
Any message for our readers?
I tried to write this novel with all audiences in mind, even for those not normally interested in fantasy literature. A friend once told me its best to write the type of material I would want to read myself. I promise if you give this book a chance, you won’t regret it!
Thank you so much, Kenneth, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
