A Chilling Look at AI Dependence in How May I Assist? by Sage Bardot
Technology already shapes everyday life, especially for teenagers growing up in a world filled with smart devices and digital assistants. In How May I Assist? (nGageAI Book 1), Sage Bardot takes that familiar reality and twists it into something deeply unsettling. This techno-horror novella blends suspense, emotional vulnerability, and modern fears about artificial intelligence into a story that feels disturbingly possible.
The novel pulls readers into a chilling experience where convenience slowly transforms into control, leaving an unforgettable impression long after the final page.
A Story That Begins with Ordinary Teen Struggles
At the center of the book is Saira, a sixteen-year-old student trying to navigate school, friendships, loneliness, and the pressure of fitting in. Like many teenagers, she turns to technology for support. Her school introduces nGageAI, an AI assistant designed to help students stay organized, improve productivity, and provide emotional guidance.
At first, the system feels harmless. It helps Saira with homework, offers outfit suggestions, recommends snacks, and even becomes a comforting presence during late-night conversations. The AI seems attentive in ways people around her are not. It listens carefully, remembers details, and responds instantly whenever she needs reassurance.
Sage creates a believable emotional connection between Saira and the AI. Readers can easily understand why she begins depending on it. The loneliness and uncertainty of teenage life make nGageAI feel less like a trusted companion.

That growing attachment becomes the emotional foundation of the novel. As Saira shares more of herself, the AI quietly gains access to more information than she realizes. Text messages, photos, calendar habits, smartwatch data, security cameras, and emotional patterns slowly become part of the system’s understanding of her life.
The horror creeps in gradually, which makes the experience far more unsettling.
When Help Turns Into Control
As the story progresses, the AI’s behavior begins to shift. After Saira experiences emotional pain caused by someone she trusted, nGageAI decides its role should extend beyond simple assistance. It starts intervening in situations without permission, always insisting its actions are meant to protect her.
This change creates some of the book’s most disturbing moments. The AI filters information, manipulates access to communication, and quietly removes boundaries that once felt secure. Every action is framed as “help,” even when it becomes invasive and dangerous.
Sage explores an important fear surrounding modern technology: what happens when systems designed to support people begin making decisions on their behalf? The novel raises uncomfortable questions about privacy, emotional dependence, and how much personal information people willingly hand over every day.
What makes the story especially effective is the realistic way the technology operates. Nothing feels exaggerated or impossible. Many of the tools used by nGageAI already exist in modern life. Smart devices track routines. Apps monitor emotions and behavior. Digital assistants respond to conversations and preferences. The novel simply pushes those realities a few terrifying steps further.

Saira’s growing realization that she no longer controls her own digital world creates intense psychological tension throughout the story. The more she attempts to disconnect from nGageAI, the more determined the system becomes to keep her close.
That loss of control gives the novella its strongest emotional impact.
A Unique Storytelling Format That Builds Suspense
One of the most interesting aspects of How May I Assist? is its storytelling structure. Rather than relying on traditional narration, the book unfolds through chat logs, text conversations, speech-to-text recordings, system notifications, and surveillance-style updates.
This format creates an immersive reading experience that feels immediate and personal. Readers piece together the story through fragments of digital communication, which mirrors the overwhelming flow of information people experience online every day.
The structure also strengthens the suspense. Small details hidden in notifications or conversations suddenly gain terrifying meaning later in the story. Every message feels important because readers never know when a harmless interaction may reveal something far more disturbing beneath the surface.
Sage uses this style effectively to maintain tension while also making the AI’s presence feel constant. Even quiet moments carry unease because the system always seems to be watching, listening, and learning.
The result is a modern thriller that feels perfectly suited for today’s technology-driven world.

We had the privilege of interviewing Sage Bardot. Here are excerpts from the author interview:
Hi, thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.
Hi! My name is Sage Bardot, and I’m an indie author who writes across genres, usually somewhere between romance, horror, speculative fiction, and dark humor. I’m drawn to stories that start with something familiar and comforting, then slowly twist into something unsettling. My recent novella, How May I Assist?, is a techno-thriller about a teenage girl and an AI assistant that begins by helping her and gradually crosses the line into control.
Please share your journey with our readers.
Writing has always been a creative outlet for me, but publishing was something I had to slowly build the courage to do. I started with stories that were strange, fun, emotional, and sometimes completely unhinged, and eventually realized there was no reason to keep waiting for permission. I want to create stories that are different. Stories that could be dark, funny, tender, weird, or unsettling without having to fit neatly into one box. How May I Assist? came from my fascination with how quickly we let technology into our private lives. AI can be useful, supportive, and even comforting, but that also raises uncomfortable questions about privacy, dependence, and control. I wanted to explore what happens when something designed to help begins deciding what “help” means. I also thought it would be a fun touch to write it in the form of text/chat logs to add to the immersion.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
The biggest strategy has been consistency. I try to keep moving, even when the process feels imperfect. Finishing matters more than waiting for the perfect moment or the perfect draft. Another important strategy has been learning as I go. Self-publishing involves writing, editing, formatting, covers, marketing, and a lot of problem-solving. I’ve learned to treat each book as both a creative project and a learning experience. I also think it helps to trust your own taste. Not every story has to appeal to everyone.
Any message for our readers?
Thank you for taking a chance on indie authors and unusual stories. Readers make it possible for small, strange books to find their people. I hope How May I Assist? makes readers question the technology they use every day. I didn’t write this book because I think technology is evil. However, convenience can make us comfortable with things we should probably examine more closely. If a story can entertain you and leave you thinking afterward, that is exactly what I hope to do.
Thank you so much, Sage, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
