In a world where silence replaces chaos, stories often reveal what truly matters. Kelly Schweiger‘s gripping series invites readers into such a world, where survival is deeply human, and every choice carries weight.
A World Rebuilt from the Ground Up
Kelly Schweiger crafts a post-apocalyptic universe set in the isolated Adirondack Mountains, where a sudden and mysterious power collapse reshapes everything. At the center stands the Callahan family and their remote Lodge, a place built on preparation, discipline, and trust.
What makes this series stand apart is its emotional depth. Instead of focusing purely on destruction or action, Kelly explores what life looks like after the collapse. Communities rebuild slowly. Children grow up without modern systems. People face difficult decisions that test their values and beliefs.
The result is a grounded and character-driven narrative where survival is not just physical, but emotional and moral as well.
Last Light: The Beginning of Survival
Last Light introduces readers to the Callahan family before and during the collapse. Gus and Jo have spent years building a self-sufficient lifestyle, preparing for the unexpected. When the power grid suddenly fails, their preparation becomes their lifeline.
Kelly uses this first installment to establish the foundation of the series. The Lodge becomes more than a shelter. It turns into a symbol of resilience and unity. As uncertainty spreads, the family must rely on their skills and their bond to navigate a world that has gone dark.

The story carries tension, yet it remains deeply personal. It shows how preparation meets reality, and how even the most prepared must adapt.
Winter’s Bite: Survival Turns Relentless
In Winter’s Bite, the stakes rise as winter tightens its grip. Food becomes scarce, illness spreads, and danger creeps closer to the Lodge. The Callahans quickly realize that survival is not only about resources. It is about trust and difficult decisions.

Kelly intensifies the emotional weight in this installment. Relationships are tested under pressure. Fear becomes a constant presence. The family faces threats that go beyond nature, including violence and desperation from others.
This book highlights how quickly stability can shift. It also emphasizes the importance of unity when everything else feels uncertain.
Enduring Fight: Defending What Matters
Enduring Fight takes the story into a more intense phase. Nearly a year after the collapse, the Callahans face a powerful and organized enemy known as the Coalition. This threat forces them to transform their haven into a defensive stronghold.

Kelly expands the narrative by introducing alliances and a broader sense of community. Soldiers, farmers, and friends come together, each bringing their own strengths. The focus shifts from survival to protection.
What stands out here is the theme of courage. Kelly shows that strength does not come from physical power alone. It grows from love, responsibility, and the willingness to stand firm when everything is at risk.
What Remains: A New Generation Steps Forward
What Remains: Children of the Pines Book One shifts the spotlight to the next generation. The world has changed, and the children are now growing into roles they were never meant to take on so soon.
The Callahan community has built a fragile sense of stability. Markets operate. Learning continues. Life moves forward in small but meaningful ways. Then, a new group arrives, calling themselves the Harbingers.

They bring promises of order and safety, and their message begins to resonate with the younger generation. Kelly explores a powerful question here. What happens when hope looks convincing, yet carries hidden risks?
This installment focuses on influence, belief, and the shaping of future leaders. It adds a fresh layer to the series by examining how perspectives shift across generations.
A Light in the Dark: Holding Onto Tradition
In A Light in the Dark: A Callahan Christmas, Kelly offers a softer, heartfelt glimpse into life after collapse. Told through the eyes of children, the story captures the first Christmas without modern comforts.
There are no lights or store-bought gifts. Instead, the family creates warmth through shared moments, storytelling, and handmade traditions. The Lodge becomes a place of joy despite the hardships outside.

Kelly brings a gentle tone to this narrative. It reminds readers that even in the darkest times, small moments of happiness can still exist.
The Callahan Family Pantry: Survival Through Food
The Callahan Family Pantry extends the series into a practical and immersive experience. This cookbook blends recipes with storytelling, offering readers a taste of life at the Lodge.

Kelly presents meals that rely on foraged ingredients, preserved goods, and simple techniques. Alongside each recipe, there is a sense of history and tradition. Food becomes more than sustenance. It becomes a source of comfort and connection.
This book adds depth to the universe. It allows readers to engage with the Callahan way of life in a tangible way.

We had the privilege of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview:
Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.
I’m Kelly Schweiger, a post-apocalyptic author and the creator of the Where the Pines Still Stand universe. I write character-driven survival stories centered on family, resilience, and what it really takes to endure when everything falls apart. My books lean into realistic prepper and homesteading elements, chronic illness, strong females, multigenerational characters, found family, and the emotional cost of survival—not just how people live, but why they keep going.
Please tell us about your journey.
I didn’t come into writing from a traditional path. I have dreamed of being an author my entire life. In my 50s, I finally decided to take it seriously and write that novel that has been living in my brain for the last 30+ years. I had published a few children’s books and cookbooks. Dipping my toes in and trying to learn.
So two years ago, I jumped in with both feet, all while managing chronic illness, raising a family, working full-time, and learning the publishing world as I went. What started as one story turned into an entire universe because the characters—and the readers—weren’t ready to let it go. I’ve grown alongside my work, learning not just how to write better stories, but how to build something sustainable and meaningful from the ground up.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
Consistency over perfection has been the biggest one. I kept showing up, even when it wasn’t easy or ideal. I also focused heavily on understanding my audience—what they actually want to feel when they read—and delivering that honestly. I am an enormous fan of this genre. From a business standpoint, I treat writing like a career, not a hobby: studying the market, improving craft, and building a connected body of work instead of one-off books.
Any message for our readers
The stories we tell, and the ones we hold onto, matter more than we realize. Whether you’re reading or writing, there’s value in showing up for something that reflects real life, real struggle, and real hope. You don’t need perfect conditions to create something meaningful. Don’t wait! Start now and grow along the way.
Thank you so much, Kelly, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
