Time usually passes unnoticed until every minute begins to feel like a day. In DISCONNECTED: A Prison. A Paradise. Two Souls., Marcelo Marçal transforms that unsettling idea into a gripping science-fiction thriller filled with digital wonder, psychological tension, and an approaching global catastrophe.
Recognized by the International Latino Book Awards, the American Fiction Awards, and Readers’ Favorite, the novel invites readers into a future where technology can fulfill human desires while quietly changing the meaning of reality itself.
Welcome to RealOne, Where Every Sense Comes Alive
Tech mogul Adam Goodwin has promised the world a revolution. His creation, RealOne, is a sophisticated metaverse designed to feel more authentic than physical life. The experience engages every sense, allowing users to enter an environment that appears complete, vivid, and deeply personal.
Behind its extraordinary sensory capabilities lies a dangerous flaw. Time inside RealOne moves differently. A single hour in the physical world becomes an entire day for the people connected to the platform. What begins as an innovative feature soon creates frightening consequences for anyone unable to leave.
Tech journalist Amanda Buckland receives the opportunity to cover RealOne’s grand opening. It should be the defining story of her career. Instead, she enters an unfolding nightmare when a massive cyberattack traps more than one million users inside the virtual world.
The people outside have hours to understand the crisis. Those inside experience months of uncertainty and psychological isolation. RealOne’s promise of unlimited freedom turns into a digital prison, where memories weaken and emotional attachments grow increasingly difficult to separate from programmed experiences.
A Race Across Two Collapsing Realities

Amanda becomes the emotional and investigative center of the story. Determined to uncover the source of the attack, she moves deeper into a world shaped by corporate secrets, hidden motives, and unreliable perceptions. Every discovery raises new questions about RealOne and the people responsible for creating it.
The danger also extends far beyond the metaverse. A nuclear threat develops in the physical world, placing millions of lives at risk. Amanda must work within RealOne’s distorted timeline while searching for information that could influence events outside. The growing difference between the two timelines adds urgency to every decision.
As her isolation continues, Amanda’s memories begin to fade. The virtual environment creates emotional experiences that feel completely genuine, including a powerful connection capable of reshaping her understanding of love. She faces an agonizing choice between exposing a truth that could destroy Goodwin’s sanctuary and holding on to a manufactured relationship that feels more meaningful than the life she remembers.
Marcelo presents these questions through fast-moving suspense across more than 70 chapters. Short developments, escalating discoveries, and high-stakes choices keep the narrative advancing as Amanda approaches the limits of her identity and endurance.
Technology, Connection, and the Fragility of Memory

DISCONNECTED blends techno-thriller tension with speculative fiction, romance, and psychological drama. Its premise reflects contemporary questions surrounding immersive technology, artificial environments, corporate responsibility, and humanity’s growing dependence on digital spaces.
The temporal divergence gives those themes an especially haunting dimension. Endless time may appear liberating, yet the novel shows how prolonged isolation can weaken a person’s relationship with memory, truth, and selfhood. The line, “When you have all the time in the universe, it becomes your enemy,” captures the unsettling heart of the story.
Readers who enjoy the reality-bending atmosphere of Black Mirror and Inception, along with the propulsive speculative thrillers associated with Blake Crouch, may find plenty to appreciate. The book’s central mystery provides momentum, while Amanda’s emotional journey gives the technological crisis a distinctly human core.
The novel received an Honorable Mention at the International Latino Book Awards and became a finalist in the American Fiction Awards. It has also earned five-star recognition from Readers’ Favorite, with reviewers highlighting its immersive storytelling, mounting suspense, and emotional intensity.
