Sheema Jackson’s ‘The Becoming Collection’ Forces Us to Confront What We Hide From Those Closest to Us

A shared grape popsicle on a hot summer day becomes the beginning of a friendship that shapes two lives. In Sheema Jackson’s The Becoming Collection, that childhood connection grows into a moving story about loyalty, painful discoveries, and the courage it takes to protect a hard-earned sense of peace.

Lila and Yasmin have spent thirty-one years being each other’s closest companion. They’ve shared heartbreak, marriage, motherhood, and the complicated experiences that accumulate across decades. Their bond carries the familiarity of someone who remembers the person a friend was before life became crowded with responsibilities.

That history gives the novel its emotional foundation. A friendship lasting this long holds countless memories, private disappointments, and moments of generosity. It also leaves room for things that have gone unsaid. Sheema places those quiet spaces at the center of a story where an unexpected arrival brings uncomfortable questions into the open.

A Birthday Party Opens the Door to Buried Secrets

Sheema Jackson The Becoming Collection-1

Lila’s fortieth birthday should be a moment of celebration. Then a stranger enters the party and introduces herself as somebody’s wife. Her appearance unsettles the occasion and sets a larger unraveling in motion.

The premise has an immediate pull. A room gathered to celebrate one woman becomes the setting for a revelation with consequences that reach into her most intimate relationships. For Lila, the disruption opens the door to parts of her life she’s spent years avoiding.

Three gold boxes of cupcakes deepen the mystery. Each holds a connection to something significant: a dark year she has never discussed, the man who showed her what real love could look like, and the fragile peace she believed she had finally secured.

These details give the story a memorable texture. Cupcakes belong naturally at a birthday party, and their familiar sweetness makes the secrets attached to them especially intriguing. Readers are invited to consider what each box represents and how its contents connect to the woman Lila has become.

The questions stretch back decades. A girl disappeared thirty-one years earlier. A name was meant to stay forgotten. Between Lila and Yasmin lies a three-year silence that neither has fully explained. Their long friendship carries the weight of these unresolved experiences, giving every new discovery an emotional history.

Alongside its suspense, the novel explores the demands of marriage and the endurance of friendship. Lila’s story raises questions about trust, devotion, and the cost of continually giving to others. Sheema also makes space for the possibility of love that helps someone feel supported, understood, and able to breathe.

That concern connects The Becoming Collection with Mrs. Dubai and the Lavender Tree, a children’s story about a tree that gives away her leaves until very little remains. Here, the question of depleted generosity enters adult life, where affection, obligation, and self-worth can become deeply tangled.

There’s something recognizable in that theme. Readers who have carried relationships through difficult years may understand the exhaustion of pouring themselves into people who rarely return the same care. Through Lila and Yasmin, the novel offers an emotionally engaging setting for examining those experiences and the choices that follow.
