A Heartfelt Escape into the World of Stories for Rainy Days
Some novels arrive like a warm drink on a cold afternoon, wrapping readers in comfort from the very first page. Stories for Rainy Days: A Celyn Falls Bookshop Romance by Simon Hughes carries exactly that feeling. Set in a charming Welsh town filled with rain-soaked streets, quiet memories, and hopeful hearts, this contemporary romance offers readers an emotional journey that lingers long after the final chapter.
A Bookshop That Refuses to Be Forgotten
At the centre of the novel is Clara Wren, a woman who arrives in the fictional town of Celyn Falls with practical intentions and a carefully planned future. After inheriting her late great-aunt Eleanor’s struggling bookshop, Clara hopes to organise the paperwork, sell the property, and quickly return to the life she knows. What she finds instead is a place that slowly begins to change her.
Wren Books is far from perfect. The roof leaks, the accounts are chaotic, and the shop seems permanently surrounded by interruptions. There is also Pickle, the famously judgmental cat who appears determined to supervise everything. Alongside him are loyal townspeople, a stubborn children’s reading club, and a community deeply connected to Eleanor’s memory.
The bookshop itself becomes one of the story’s strongest characters. Simon Hughes creates an atmosphere that feels wonderfully lived-in, full of dusty shelves, rainy windows, and quiet corners where stories seem to settle into the walls. Readers who love cosy fiction and bookshop settings will immediately feel at home in Celyn Falls.
Romance, Healing, and the Beauty of Second Chances
While the novel offers charm and humour, its emotional depth gives the story lasting impact. Clara’s journey is not simply about deciding whether to keep a bookshop. It becomes a gentle exploration of grief, belonging, memory, and the courage required to begin again after loss.
Tom Ellis, the carpenter next door, enters the story with quiet steadiness and warmth. His kindness never feels forced or overly dramatic, which suits the tone of the novel perfectly. Their slow-burn connection unfolds naturally through shared moments, repairs around the shop, conversations during rainy afternoons, and the gradual rebuilding of trust in both themselves and others.
The romance remains tender and emotionally grounded throughout. Readers searching for a closed-door romance with sincerity, emotional honesty, and meaningful character development will appreciate the careful pacing. Simon Hughes focuses on emotional connection rather than dramatic twists, creating a relationship that feels believable and comforting.
The novel also captures the importance of community. Celyn Falls is filled with people who interfere, support, remember, and care deeply about one another. These relationships give the story warmth and authenticity. Every café conversation, children’s reading session, and rainy evening adds another layer to the town’s identity.
The Atmospheric Magic of Celyn Falls
One of the novel’s greatest strengths is its setting. Celyn Falls feels vivid and deeply personal, shaped by rain, memory, old streets, and hidden stories. Simon Hughes writes Wales with affection and understanding, giving the town a strong emotional presence without overwhelming the narrative.
The mood throughout the book remains reflective, hopeful, and comforting. Rain becomes more than weather here. It creates atmosphere, encourages reflection, and mirrors the emotional journeys of the characters. Readers who enjoy novels filled with nostalgia, emotional warmth, and immersive settings will likely find themselves completely drawn into the world of Celyn Falls.
There is also a timeless quality to the storytelling. The book embraces quieter moments rather than rushing through them. Small details matter, whether it is a rainy-day window display, a shared cup of coffee, or a child listening to stories about dragons. These scenes allow the emotional themes to breathe naturally.
As the first novel in the Celyn Falls Romance series, Stories for Rainy Days successfully introduces a setting readers will want to revisit. The story feels complete while still leaving room for future journeys within the town.

We had the privilege of interviewing Simon Hughes. Here are excerpts from the author interview:
Hi, thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.
My name is Simon Hughes. I am a writer from North Wales, and I write warm, emotional, character-led fiction with a strong sense of place. My stories often explore love, memory, belonging, second chances, and the quiet turning points that shape people’s lives. I am especially drawn to atmospheric settings, old buildings, bookshops, cafés, small communities, and the emotional pull of returning home. My novel, Stories for Rainy Days, is a contemporary romance set in the fictional Welsh town of Celyn Falls. It is a warm, reflective, and emotional story about love, loss, healing, and finding hope after difficult times.
Please share your story with our readers.
I have loved writing for as long as I can remember. Stories have always been a way for me to understand people, places, emotions, and the moments that stay with us long after they happen. Over the years, I have written in different forms and explored many creative projects, but fiction has always remained at the heart of what I want to do.
Stories for Rainy Days started from a seed when I was studying for my Creative Writing MA. It stemmed from my love of atmospheric, emotional storytelling. I wanted to write a novel that felt comforting but meaningful — the kind of book readers could curl up with on a rainy day, but also one that carried real emotional depth. The setting of Celyn Falls is fictional but inspired by the Welsh town where I was born, grew up, left for 25 years, and then returned to during Covid. I love places with rivers, old streets, independent shops, community spirit, and a sense that every building has a story.
The journey of writing this book has been about creating a world readers can step into, but also about telling a story that feels honest. It is about people carrying the past, learning to heal, and finding the courage to open themselves up to love and hope again.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
The biggest strategy has been consistency. Writing a novel takes time, patience, and discipline. I have learned that you cannot wait for perfect inspiration; you have to keep showing up, keep writing, and keep improving the work even when it feels difficult.
Another important strategy has been writing from the heart while still thinking about the reader. I want my books to feel emotionally honest, but I also want them to give readers a satisfying experience. That means focusing on character, atmosphere, pacing, setting, and the emotional journey.
I believe in building strong fictional worlds. For Stories for Rainy Days, the town of Celyn Falls is not just a backdrop. It is part of the story. Creating a strong sense of place helps readers feel as though they are living inside the novel, not just reading it.
Finally, I have learned to keep going. Every creative journey has doubts, setbacks, and moments when you question yourself. The important thing is to continue, keep learning, and believe that the story you are writing matters.
Any message for our readers?
My message to readers is simple: I hope Stories for Rainy Days gives you warmth, comfort, and hope.
This is a novel for anyone who enjoys emotional romance, second chances, atmospheric settings, and stories about love, healing, and belonging. It is a book for readers who understand that life is not always perfect, that people carry pain quietly, and that sometimes the smallest moments can change everything.
I hope readers fall in love with Celyn Falls, with its rain-soaked streets, cosy corners, old memories, and sense of community. Most of all, I hope the story reminds readers that even after loss, heartbreak, or regret, there is still room for hope, connection, and new beginnings.
Thank you so much, Simon, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
